Quitting In January

I think I'm going to quit in January. I can't handle this any more. Will I get all my 2021 vacation paid out?

Agree. A body can only take so much stress and anguish. Its not like there is any financial upside for employees evenbwhenbtjd price of oil goes back up.

USA based jobs are getting sent to lower cost countries. If you are early in your career and don’t like XOM, I suggest you don’t risk it and find another job. Stay long enough to have XOM on your resume but not too long where your skills are outdated and leave on a good note.

I’m mentally out too.. logging on each day to clock the attendance. Although most of my time spent working from home had been on building a back up plan..

I plan on quitting in July but I have already mentally quit. Am going to do the absolute minimum necessary to prevent stuff from blowing up. Other than that my time will be spent taking classes and looking for a job outside the oil industry.

Hopefully I get the PIP next summer, but I’m out with or without a package. At least it’ll save someone else’s job.

Totally agree with @KXC, I am also planning on leaving in January without another job lined up. Was hoping to be part of the layoffs but that was not the case. I’ll take the 2 floating holidays since those do not get paid out first. Plan on getting a few certifications and taking a break before starting the job hunt back up in late Spring for a lower paying job. This job has proven to me it’s not all about the money.

To others also thinking of leaving, understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to leaving. It’s okay to leave without another job in the pipeline, despite what others and the internet may say. Personally, I need to regain control of my mental health that this job has damn near destroyed before I’d feel ready to give my best at another job. My workload has also increased 3x since the departure of laid off colleagues, so I definitely don’t have time to be looking for a job at night anymore. And I’ll be damned if I have to put myself through another rank cycle. Fortunate that I have access to spouse’s healthcare, I know that’s not the case for everyone.

You’re not the only one. Taking some vacation over Christmas has made me realize just how much I dread the place with all its dysfunction. I’ve decided I am out in January as well. Looking for jobs over the break now. I may take an initial drop in income but o bet I’ll be money ahead in a few years as no one at Exxon Mobil is getting a raise anytime soon.

With regards to people saying to have another job lined up before quitting, sure that would be ideal....but going to work, feeling like a zombie, just going through the motions for weeks upon weeks is very miserable and not worth the money you are getting paid. I know that is hard for some to understand since people seem to be programmed to think making money at a job is the most important thing in life.

I was lucky in that I got laid off on Dec 1st. I turned to my partner that morning and said I have no idea how I am going to make it to January (I had planned to quit in January exactly like OP, with or without a job offer, hunting for a few months at that point). I would rather spend my days looking for a new job than faking it at XOM. I also had more in savings than the average person (financial investor expert would say my approach is wrong but it works for me and that’s the person I have to live with, myself)

OP, if you can ride your savings for bit, more power to you and enjoy the payment in lieu on your 2021 vacation and good luck with your time off and your new job hunt!

@roo+18w1hmlT 40% in the US I’d hope is an understatement. However a “good” job offer compared to EM comp wise is harder to find than people think.

I think executives at XOM will be happy you quit either around this time or the next year. They can save more money for their next salary increase and bonuses for themselves. You probably will not get your vacation for quitting; but you can take some vacation before quitting.

Quitting because you are burnt out is not a great idea. Leave with a plan: first take a break, vacations, leave of absence, whatever. Second update your resume, your LinkedIn profile, expand your network. Third apply for jobs, interview, get offers. And only then quit.

That would be an interesting & scary employee survey.

  1. Number of people who contemplated quitting in last last months
  2. Number of people who plan to quit in next 6 months
  3. Number of people who have been job shopping over the last 6 months

Wouldn’t be surprised if the results indicate greater than 40% are one good job offer from the door....that’s a lot of people
