Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Motivation? Gone :-(

It's getting more and more difficult to stay motivated working here. If you are in a high cost location like the Houston Campus, it is becoming quickly evident that everything is about GBC's. You are just a human resource for a means to an end. Train the people at the GBC's. All development focus is for those resources. When they don't need us, they will either PIP us or just do another layoff. Pretty depressing. This is what the company has become

@3nsg+18mpr6Qg Even those currently in the top 10% should realize they are one personality conflict away from being PIPd. Change in ranking system and current events should be considered.

Seeing top 10% leaving the company already. Why stick it out here when more money can be made elsewhere?

It can be tough working and staying in a company where you realize that days are numbered and/or you are not a good fit. My advice is always to do the best job you can. Don't work crazy long hours as no one benefits from that in the long term. Learn everything you can, keep your skills developing and if you are really not happy, develop and execute an exit strategy.

I think the past 12 months has shown that EM is not a career for life for everyone.. only the "top" 10%. You'll certainly know if you are not in that priviledged group. As long as you are smart in recognizing that...you have taken your first step.

My team - highly praised by ALL of its internal clients for its superior quality of service compared to the average GBC - will be dissolved and the tasks moved to GBC in the near future. At the same time I'm learning that the corporation took some unconsulted decisions (not hindered by any subject matter expertise) in our ERPs that are (a) done for the wrong reasons, (b) are the wrong solution to the local "problem" in the US and (c) are handcuffing most process improvement initiatives we had been working on across the Globe. We are now instead of improving process trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Difference with the Apollo mission : we're not saving lives, we're trying to enrich our shareholders while eliminating our own positions ... all on the short term because there is no vision beyond 5 years at all ... Try staying motivated in those circumstances ...

The productivity of a company always declines after a layoff. This is normal, and shall pass. Hang in there. We will be great again but we have to tough it out and not give up.

If you don't like it here, please help yourself with a job somewhere else and stop whining.

Agree with most of you sentiments OP. It’s a very difficult environment to work in. Regardless of COVID the company’s OPEX is the highest in the industry so there would inevitably be shifting to lower cost areas. While I think Capitalism and a market based economy is the best out there, it certainly has its warts. And this is one of them. So be motivated to learn as much as you can while here, save up money (we are paid generally well compared to other places) and when the time comes, which is likely for most of EMIT at the campus, you will find a better company.

Last time I worked on something modern and innovative? Today. It’s part of my job.

Yeah, we need to get out while we can. My past 2 teams were dissolved and we handed the work off to BA folks. It’s going to happen all across.

The Houston campus will basically be a college campus with interns and fresh out of college hires with a few “managers” managing their day to day.

When was the last time you worked on something innovative or relevant to today’s technology? We are ALWAYS so behind
