Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

LinkedIn posts - typical Exxon

By reading at LinkedIn, you may think an asteroid hit.
It's all passive voice, and even "leaders" speak as if they are bystanders and witnesses.

"Colleagues have been impacted"
"were made redundant"
"We watched so many leave"
"If you've been affected"

It's just gross how they pat each other in the back for how "courageous" they are, and their display of "generosity", caring for others, and "community". Just plain bullish!t.

None has the courage to say that bad decisions led to an outcome that could have been prevented. None states that it was a choice to layoff people instead of x,y,z other measures. And definitely none will dare to use their courage to point out that there will be more layoffs next year.

Obviously every superficial and fake post ends with the mandatory "we are the best", Exxon only hires the best, and everyone will be happy to have our spoils. What a bunch of self-congratulating garbage. Tone deaf and true to form.

There was this stupid dum a– employee from the Upstream. Pretty useless resume and had never had another job but was offering advise, mentorship and resume preparation for other laid off employees. This guy gave laid off people 7 days to approach him and assigned a limit of only 4 people a day with max time limit of 30 minutes. Honestly this person will never get a job anywhere where they need things done.

Seriously, where else could you find such tards?

LinkedIn as a whole is a cesspool of self-congratulatory posts. Nothing special about all these EM people who recently discovered the platform and want to make “content”.

Hey Dan Price asked his workers to take half pay...then he got the payroll protection act to pay the other half to them. Pure genius!

But for real, no one in the real world ever here asked if they’d take less pay to do the same job in lieu of being laid off.

Literally couldn't agree more. These are the same people that if Exxon throws them a piece of candy, they will come running back.

Couldn’t agree more. Welcome to the oil and gas industry for the last 5 years! It’s like they think they are the first people in this city to get laid off. Shows you how thick snd small their bubble is. Where were they when CVX, BP, Shell et all announced layoffs after layoffs. Where were these caring souls when their ranking system crushed their colleagues so they could get ahead.

And the “these are some of the most talented people in the industry, should go to the top of the resume pile”. Please. Welcome to the harsh reality of the buisness. XOM sold the “career for life” hogwash and now it’s exposed.

Consider that for privacy reasons, there is no posting of individuals under the redundancy program. There is no public list. Having worked 20+ years, I have friends and colleagues scattered throughout the company, so my Linked In post is me personally defending those that lost their jobs, and extending a hand.

People are laughing at us. Every company laidoff and nobody put that nonsense on LI. All of a sudden XOM is so caring and loving people company. Shame on those people posting, actually copy/paste. You really could have done more for your colleagues, for industry, for humanity, just as a person, than copy/paste.

Hypocrites. Many in my intermediates department.. wish they were gone so that we can progress!

You make callous judgements just as you say those who posted are callous. I have seen a handful of the posts on LI and personally know the people behind those posts, having worked with them over the years. All the posters I have seen are good people. Many of those laid off don’t want coworkers calling them up offering help. Better we know who we can reach out to in our own due time.

As an outsider who has worked for the European oil majors I have always wondered how ‘great’ the culture was at XOM. Arrogance if you ask me. It’s not a surprise there are shareholder activist groups. Is it as disconnected / siloed and backbiting as it appears on the inside ???

@rfb+18mDw293 Exactly! Did you find it humorous that people who were so interested in being your so called friend suddenly didn’t know you the minute you were PIP’d? Gossip and more gossip.

@cmi - if you’re referring to the identical posts that seem to be an EM-approved text (and even say that they were copied and pasted from another post), then I whole-heartedly agree with you.

These LI posts reek of insincerity. However, I guess it’s still slightly better than the treatment given to those laid off in July. Everyone who remained just ignored us.

My dear LI posters that you care so much for others who lost jobs this is what you can do: do something tangible instead of promoting yourself and your generosity on LI, call people, take them out to lunch, talk to them, take them and introduce them to someone who is hiring, find jobs and send them a list, organize and create courses for them so they keep skill set, organize webinars, share information about industry, etc. that is available to you and can be shared. For those VPs and higher ups who care so much call your congressmen, senators, tell them about job losses, impact, encourage them to promote oil, call your CEO friend who is hiring and tell him that you just laid off the best and he/she should hire them as they are so good. Donate money to people in needs.

Completely dishonest and worthless LI posts from snitches. They offer to check resume-at exxon we dont use resume, so they know nothing about it. They post exxon people are the best and all that nonsense that will hurt people who lost jobs. If I am at Company X hiring I would be scratching my head when I read those posts and in fact would avoid exxon people. Sure, entire industry loves exxon, such a bs, and if we were the best we would not be here. Moreover, what does it really mean the best. And so on and so on.

I think it's great if people want to help out a former colleague. However, send them a text or a private message and offer a recommendation or a referral. I had several colleagues reach out in private after I was PIP'd. They all thought that the situation was BS and it meant a lot that they were willing to take time to make connections and get my resume out to their connections. Even some senior managers who I barely knew sent me emails offering to help. I would have never contacted someone reposting a generic "look at me" post on LinkedIn.
