Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exodus

We have already had a couple people resign and leave who were not laid off. Anyone else seeing this?

@1icc+18gw2URZ Your comments ring true to me. Our VP said as much. High percentage PIPoff will be the norm going forward each year all while continuing to hire. They think they need to keep new talent with new ideas coming in. Somehow I think it will only apply to low CL and non HoPos though.

Those with technical skills should leave ASAP. The company is of the mindset that any technical role can be moved to a GBC/BSC/TSC. Most engineering work in Production (UIS value chain now) is being moved to a TSC. F&L will run into a MAJOR re-org in March. IT has a GBC/MSP or bust mentality. NSI will have a MANDATORY 8% forced rank in the 2021 PDS cycle.

If I was less than 20 years and not a CL28+, I would get out ASAP. Im expecting XOM to have 50K or less global employees by 2025. The rest will be outsourced to a contractor of some sort (MSP, etc).

Also heard the recruiting pitch will no longer be "you can have a career with ExxonMobil"

The ship captain running HR is ruthless!!!

I’d hate to be a Talent/S&D manager right now. Getting the shaft from both ends. Having to get rid of low performers plus some pretty good people, and on the other end having the people with sufficient transferrable skills and personal drive leaving on their own. What’s left will be your high ranking managers who got us all into this mess in the first place, and then some IC’s that are people without either or both valuable skills and self motivation. Winning package right there.

I have bragging rights! I resigned twice from ExxonMobil. My only transgression was coming back the second time! But seriously, I do have an excuse....came back the second time into Chemicals and it was a much better experience. Unfortunately, got s—ed into EMRE in 2014 and it was downhill from there. ExxonMobil is very much character dependant. If you are passive, compliant and don't show any "insubordination" you will generally be ok as long as not completely useless in your job. If you question authority, ask searching questions or in any respect, challenge management (oh sh–) forget it....you are toast. It doesn't matter if you are the best worker in the world....if you question the status quo, new initiatives from management, or show any backbone...you will not survive. This is the reality of ExxonMobil.

Would you want to pay someone to do absolutely nothing? Or wait it out while they continue to work for you for the same cost?

Also, CA severance maxes out at 24 months unless you’re an exec.

@kse+18gw2URZ Your comment makes no sense. Why would the company pay people to stay on payroll for 1-3 years if they aren’t needed. Severance packages are small in USA and I don’t expect you get a severance of 3+ years salary in Canada either.

Workforce arbitrage. A lot of people have to train their low-cost replacements before they can collect their severance.

The finance functions have transferable skills and have been abused / underpaid for years. All the good early career people are leaving. Good luck ever figuring out how to make money with undergrad sycophant aggies being all that’s left...

The people who leave voluntarily are those with competitive skillsets. Exxon is just another gas station to most people outside of O&G. It's a big world out there

Management expects the resignations. It’s part of the plan to reduce costs. In Canada, there was no voluntary option because they didn’t want to pay people to leave when those people would leave on their own and for free in 1-3 years.

If you don’t think management plans on people to resign on their own and expects it you’re naive.

@vpw+18gw2URZ Same here. I was an experienced hire. Prior to oil and gas worked in aerospace. I find the people who came to EM straight out of college with a bachelors degree and have never worked anywhere else are the least prepared for this. Many haven’t kept their skills up and seem to think they will leave and find a perfect company somewhere else. There is a reason there are so many movies like OfficeSpace and Up in the Air. When you first join a company there is a honeymoon phase. It doesn’t last forever. Not saying you have to stay at EM just saying do t get your hopes up too high. Look at how long people stay in jobs typically. It isn’t for life. There is a reason for this. They are fired or get sick of where they work and try something new.

@vcz+18gw2URZ I am looking and am not an abused partner as you state. I’ve always kept my options open even prior to the downturn. If something better comes along I will jump. If I am fired I feel prepared as I keep my network up with other companies and training in skills outside companies value. I was an experienced hire and have worked other places even outside of oil and gas. Just saying don’t get your hopes up too high there is a nirvana somewhere else, you know this devil but that doesn’t mean there are a bunch of saints out there waiting for you to go work for. Every place has problems. The problems are just different.

Yes, it’s happening. Just spoke with someone ranked outstanding with distinction (I think that’s what they call it in the new system?). They were not laid off. That individual is putting their 2 weeks notice on Dec 15. New job is going to be worlds better and much higher pay. EM is dying, and there isn’t much left to write home over. We’ll see a mass exodus once the job market picks back up. Who would ever want to be part of such a sneaky, lying, backstabbing culture like ours? It’s utterly disgusting.

Spoken like an abused partner. Just keep taking the beating with the mindset that this company is the best there is to offer. You know.. Aside from all the people let go/resigned earlier this year claiming they are happier (and at times making more money) versus working with exxonmobil.

The grass is definetly not greener at any O&G company. Especially given the slow decline in demand with a race to the bottom mentality with all majors. We will definetly see a major shift downwards in this industry over the next decade and it will be felt all across this company.

Time to start looking forward and moving to companies that are actually growing and trying to make a change to improve the world. Staying here is just sticking with the status quo and treating life as if it's business as usual. If the grass is not greener there, at least it's out of our BS corporate culture.

You may be surprised to learn the grass is not all that much greener on the other side of the fence. Many of the problems at ExxonMobil are problems elsewhere as well. I do question why when people get to a certain CL they seem to become untouchable and can do no wrong. I think we need to quit moving people so often so they have to face the consequences of their short sighted decisions rather than move onto the next promotion and leave it for someone else to clean up.

@rsu+18gw2URZ

Sure. You can take my full time work load without a raise, 401k match, better benefits anytime soon. I'd rather take a paycut than be associated with this company anyway.

All is fine and all when you talk to co-workers, but the rest of the world views this company very negatively. At this point, I almost shy away from what do you do /where do you work questions when asked in public. Do you really feel proud of this company when talking to non-O&G people (or even with other majors..) We are slowly becoming one of the worst majors.

Couple this in with years of downturn with no nice lunches, no travel, no exciting work opportunities to really expand your skillset. What benefit are you really getting out of this for yourself aside from collecting a paycheck?

The company used to proclaim it hired for the long term and didn't do any layoffs. Back in March they were lying through their teeth as they increased PIP targets and started planning studies for the recent layoff all while saying no layoffs. These activities will continue for years as part of the re-org and transition of work to low cost areas.

You joke about "dead weight" leaving, but many were likely ranked better than you (excellent) and were only let go because of the chair they sat in at the time the company wanted less people.

The culture is toxic, you can very easily be blindsided with your employment status, and additional large workloads are coming. I'm safe for now and have consistently ranked well for years, but starting to look around for other opportunities as this company has already indicated there are no limits to what it will do.

Everyone I know who is worth their salt has either found a new job or is actively looking, or is taking classes on the down low. You can bet there will be a huge amount of people resigning voluntarily next year.

Only good people resign. ExxonMobil is not a place for someone with talents. It is a place where dead weight and greed are in abundance. Look at Dallas and then some of your colleagues.

They know that they won’t make the next cut.. better to go. I’m safe. Not worried and am glad the dead weighs are gone!
