Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Alternative plans to decrease number of lay offs

Has anyone proposed alternative plans which could have saved a number of jobs while still making money for the company?

If yes, would you care to share them?

What was the reaction to the proposal from management?

Looks like many are willing to do nothing at all to try to help themselves, their colleagues, the company - which in the end pays the salaries.
"Asking people to give solutions for past events that can’t be changed" was not the question.

@OP you’re delusional if you expected anything positive out of asking people to give solutions for past events that can’t be changed.

Positive comment thinking about the past? Lol! Get over it, move on, realize companies have different goals for how they operate. Dwelling on the past on what should have, could have, etc prevents you from moving into the future.

OP here.

Wow, how a positive question leads to negative input. There must be examples over the globe of how we can save jobs and still save money and who would know them better than the workers themselves?

I have seen plenty go wrong in our department, e.g. more digital programs forced upon us leading to much more work and less efficiency, but in Europe the answer from management is (too) often "it works in the US so it has to work here too".

Why would the company keep people who literally have nothing to work on? I get that there will be some areas that end up getting slammed with work due to the layoffs but there are many areas where people were having to fake being busy.

OP I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.

Sometimes there just aren’t a lot of good options and it s—s. This is one of those times.

I suppose we all could work like my friend who has been bored as hell but told me he couldn’t justify leaving because of how much he was paid. Worked about as many hours each day as he spent at the gym on campus for the last seven or so years. Hand on the Bible true story.

I realize many people cut this was not the case. Probably a minority are this case. But what happens if we get rid of alll the non value add work people complain about? Are we over staffed then? Look at our development plans and the reduction in activity.

So how would that have played out.

Low level manager: I have an idea for how we can avoid layoffs
VP: tell me more
Low level manager: we won’t award RSUs to executives and will cut everyone’s salary so that the pain is shared but no one has to be fired. We will do this until prices recover possibly years on the future
VP: you’re fired

I seriously doubt the people who were making the layoff plans are on this board. Hint. Your supervisor and manager and managers manager weren’t allowed to explore options as you propose.

Of course everyone thinks first if they just quit paying the dividend my job wouldn’t have to go away. Consider however there wouldn’t be work for you to do and our competitors are cutting as well. Hard reality of the way things work. If you aren’t competitive you go out of business. Even ExxonMobil.

Plans such as what? Let’s all take a pay cut and work half time until there is a recovery who knows how many years in the future? Sounds good in a Hallmark Movie but truth is morale would decline further and much talent would jump ship if this was implemented.
