Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

sad news but happy for humbling the XOM ego!

sorry but I am just venting a bit of my repressed feelings when I was laid off from XOM back in 2013. the industry was in a very decent shape back then... It was a tremendous bummer for me, not only for loosing a good job, but for the lack of compassion and empathy of my former co-workers, their egotism was incredibly out of this world.. most assured they would never ever been laid off because XOM hold their backs and "people is the most important asset, their position are relevant for the company... bla, bla", when I reached out to keep in touch after the laid-off, many never replied to my emails or texts (bad friends I know yeah). as time passed I reunited with couple of them in geo-conferences, and all I could notice was that mindset of having life-long careers in exxon, nobody gives a $h!t for the rest... this week when I see linkedin posts, it reminded me to keep humble and always exercise compassion for your coworkers after lay-offs... exxon employees need to stop thinking they are the best...

I know plenty of excellent professionals laid-off in golden years of EM; they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, that's it. Nothing about their performance.

people speculating about poor performance of the OP, are likely new to EM and don't understand the corporate bureaucracy.

Keep saying yes to everything, be clean with your words, play golf with your supervisors and then you have learned how to play the corporate game!!

EM has screwed many many people each and every year since time began. If you stay long enough, you will get it too.

The hotshots here that ridicule the sufferings of others will be so surprised when the hammer comes down on them, and it will sooner or later.

They will be the ones that post I was a top ranked high flier so how did I end up in the bottom of the rank list and get laid off? It's not fair!!

Then someone else will post that they must have been a worthless low performer who deserved what they got. and life will have come full circle.

Op, sorry you laid off in 2013, regardless of circumstances.

Freakin OP, are you that bitter that you are joyful for people losing their job? No wonder you got fired! sound like a true joy to be around!

Uh em- these responses just prove op’s point. Bag of tools!

Be happy you moved on in 13.

And yes the worm turns even for the smartest people in the smartest company.

So humbling the oil patch.

I am embarrassed I work with such hateful people. How can you call someone a low performer when you don't know the person or the circumstances that took place in 2013? And sadly, there are many of you spewing ugly comments. It's easy to be a bully when no one can see you, isn't it?

In 2013, XOM was not in a layoff, back then XOM was solely terminating employment for cause (low performance). This OP is a bottom 3% ranked person.

It did not happen that easily in 2013. Company was re-hiring employees then, not laying them off if they were worth a dad-gum.

For those criticizing OP he very well could have just p-ss-d off the wrong person once. If you haven’t seen that happen you haven’t been paying attention.

Laid off in 2013 that means your were a really c-appy employee. No wonder no one returned your calls. You would have been on goals and objectives back then, and still not done anything asked of you to get laid off!
This time some really good people got laid off with out a chance, not even PIL!

EM work culture has been likened to Soviet-style on these boards - for a good reason. For someone from a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere in other companies, EM felt so unfriendly and repressive.

We are now smaller than T-Mobile-U.S., so any swagger that remains is disconnected from reality.

We all should be more humble, less selfish and more caring for others. That’s too much to ask of most of us, but it is true.

OP just trying to get the reaction these replies, including mine I guess, are giving them. Folks have too much going on in their lives and careers to continue a digital relationship with a colleague, much less a former colleague. Especially one who was "Laid Off" in 2013. I can't recall any lay offs in 2013. OP must have been an extreme low performer or violated some clear company policy.

generalizations are always wrong, but yes, exxon has the most arrogant people in this industry

I agree there is an ego at play there with XOM employees. I spent 20 years around them and always thought they lived in a bubble. Maybe it's just a certain personality type they hire, or perhaps they adopt it when they get there. They never seemed to relax, but were always guarded in their speech and behavior, like they were afraid of making a mistake. Perhaps paranoid? Once I moved away and got into other environments, it became more apparent looking back that bubble people are real.
