Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Why do I have a manager that is incapable of doing my job?

Seriously, my manager knows next to nothing about my job responsibilities. Why would I go to her for advice or direction? Why should I listen to her during performance reviews? And the main question I’ve been asking is why is she my manager? Just speaks to the joke that is UP.

My guess is because the manager can spell.

They do not need to know your job. They just have to say yes.

Wow that was over sixteen years ago back when morale was still pretty good. Well at least a few liked you. Most likely the ones you played favorite to.

No doubt. Except for the good employees. The uninterested ones hated my guts.

I did miss speak and said pensions. The Railroad pays my Harriman but you also did pay into Railroad retirement so you are in a way paying my retirement just as I’m paying yours if your also collecting from RRB. Like I said thanks. I worked with and respected the craft people As a manager unlike you it sounds.i bet they hated you.

I haven’t contributed to your pension. I’ve been drawing the Harriman since 2004.

Was pretty sure that would butt hurt you. A managers job is not to know how to do the crafts job but to make sure they have the tools and training to do that job to the best of their ability. Sure they know some aspects of the position but their job is to manage not do it. As far as me being the victim yes I am. Spent 42 years out here not having a clue what i was doing and now you are contributing to my pensions. Thank You very much. Out

I can. So your position is a journeyman craft person’s inability to to learn their craft is a management issue. If that was true there would be no qualified craft persons when we know there are some. Just not many that can perform the tasks outlined in their agreement. The folks that take responsibility for themselves and have pride in their work always manage to learn their craft. The rest always play victim.

Because of bad management. Can’t you read?

The bigger question is why are there so many folks in the crafts unable to do their jobs either?

I concerned as to why this is even a question? If you actually work for the UP, then the answer is pretty damn obvious. The UP doesn't actually want managers that know what they're doing. The managers that know what they're doing, can usually do a task without someone telling them. Thats what the UP doesn't want. They don't want lower management thinking for themselves. The ones that don't know are easier to control, because they don't know what they're doing. Think about it

Managers shouldn't be able to do the job. However, they should be able to listen and learn from the employees that do know how to do the job. By learning, watching, and listening they should be able to make decisions that get the work done effectively. Union Pacific managers are largely incapable of this, with some exceptions. Unfortunately, the few capable managers are forced to cover for the inadequacies of the majority of managers who are incompetent. Speaking from a shop perspective, we've got 25 year managers that still don't know where to park locomotives to avoid crane conflicts, and have no knowledge of how long it takes to perform repair tasks. If you haven't learned these basics after a few years, you are not competent to perform your job.

IMHO,any leadership or anyone here for that matter, that attempts to respect, acknowledge, or otherwise reward productivity, experience, seniority, or any reasonable attempt to improve the day to day functionality will quickly be reprimanded.

At least at UP, they are too busy slurping their way to the top. Knowledge of the actual job at hand is of minimal importance.

That is normal at UP, if you see something different in management then watch out or that management person won’t be there very long. I once told a director, manager and someone from HR you’ll have ample time to do your job, you won’t have to do mine. They were totally dumbfounded, speechless for two reasons. They had no idea what they had just heard and had never heard it before. That’s why I would never be in management. None of them knew how to do mine or their jobs.

All my manager does is cook the hot dogs at the safety feeds, but he does a good job.

I personally have worked at several different companies where my direct supervisor was capable of doing my job. Must be a UP thing. Poor management from the top down.

@nvk...It’s like that everywhere? Seems like a blanket statement to me. Your response still didn’t address the questions in the original post.

It's like that every where. If you look at Glassdoor, it is rare to find a manager who knows how to do a job. If she is nice to you, then be happy with her. I have worked with very hands-on managers who would constantly look over my shoulder and very controlling. If they know your job well, they will be harping on you every five minutes thinking you will screw up and point at every little mistake. Even if you don't make the mistakes, they will look hard for 'mistakes.' Then ask why you are not done yet because they could have finished so much sooner... or else set some unreasonable deadline because the job is not that hard (to them).
