Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Don’t be selfish — show some compassion to your manager

As your manager informs you that you are being laid off, remember that he or she learned today that the incentive program has been cancelled for 2020 (except for Darren and his direct reports, of course). The horror!!

This is traumatic news for your manager, as this amounts to a loss of annual goodies in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. You may now be out of a job, but your manager may have to defer the purchase of that new luxury car and second home in Aspen, not to mention the 2 week European vacation. Your manager has to suffer that inconvenience in addition to zero salary treatment, no savings plan match and no extravagant business trips for the foreseeable future.

Therefore, when your manager notifies you of your layoff and seems out of sorts during the communication, you’ll know why he is really upset. Instead of selfishly focusing on yourself in that moment, reach out and ask him what you can do to make him feel better.

After all, he won’t remember you the day after you are gone, but the loss of his expensive toys...now that’s traumatic and will take some time to recover from.

We are in this together.

Yes, the truth hurts. Of course, the OP was not indicting all managers and there are some good ones.

However, there are also some who are aptly described by the OP’s post. Ask them in 6 months for the names of those they laid off and more than a few will give you blank stares. However, the suspension of the incentives in 2020 will be etched in their memory for years.

We are free to assess what’s most important in life.

Op’s little satirical ditty did its thing... pushed some buttons on the leadership side.

I’m sure he’s feeling good about that.

Lighten up folks.

This will be over in 1-4 quarters.

I love the sarcasm. I see that some of the readers took this WAY too seriously. No, it is not representative of all the managers, but there are truthful elements in there for sure.

My supervisors and managers for the most part were all people I respected. A few bad apples but I guess everyone needs to demonize and make a villain out of people as part of the emotions associated with being laid off. Kind of like when your girlfriend dumps you and now you hate her and see only bad in her even though she dumped you not the other way around. If all your supervisors and the company were the devil incarnate why didn’t you leave years ago?

So are you the virtuous one that stands up in company forums and screams at DW objecting when he says people are our greatest asset? Didn't hear you. So you agree with him?

Do you stand up in safety meetings and argue that EM goes overboard on safety? Again, haven't heard people talking about this rebel that speaks his mind.

Do you seize the floor in exec presentations and tell management that some of the gate review steps don't add much value? No, quiet, so quiet.

Do you do all of these things and proudly gather the wife and kids around the kitchen table proclaiming that you only do and say things at EM that match 100% with your personal opinions? Then tell them that you got laid off, but by golly, EM knows where I stand! Look at me! I won!

I'm sure you tell everyone you meet not to do or say anything that you don't agree with or else! Try that with a cop, judge, CEO, or just about anyone else in life other than your kids and pets.

Climb down off that mountain of self righteousness. No one agrees 100% with what the company requires them to say or do. It's called a job. Called reality. Called the world does not revolve around me. Called retiring with millions. At least I am smart enough to recognize it.

It’s amazing how much these rants sound like Qanon delusional fever dreams. All the people I know who got laid off yesterday and today were good workers, as were the supervisors who had to deliver that message. I’ve gone in and out of mgmt roles in my 15 years here, and most of your managers have done the same. I’m willing to write a lot of these rants off as people blowing off steam, but now that you’ve done that grow up.

See what I mean? Mad, spoiled, ignorant little boys who have known nothing but entitlement and participation trophies all their life. "I can't get ahead because of those mean old execs. mommy."

You assume I am bad because I am not like you. Thank goodness. You can judge, whine, throw rocks, pout, curse, pillage and destroy at will, I don't care. But like the Op, people like you will never amount to much in life because you are so angry that you can't compete with those that do well in life. We work and sacrifice while you complain and spew hate. It is too easy to beat you.

Oh, part of toeing the company line is not being too hard on the younger generation as they are known to be very insecure and not accustomed to criticism. So yeah, I don't like it, but we do that for you.

What a load of bs. Managed are billed and in turn bully everyone under them and lets face it a lot if you damn well enjoy it and that’s why your willing to stab whoever it takes in the back and fight to get there. You guys are the biggest part of the dam problem. YOU are where the toxic environment starts.

EM managers are neither as greedy nor rich as you insinuate.
On the other hand, you don't need to be either to be soul-free.
What is the quality needed?
It is not the money. No. You can get that doing good things.
And that is quantity, anyhow.

What is the required Quality for a Manager at EM?
Probably a simple answer.

You spend your day supporting the company line whether you agree with it or not? What’s hard or noble about that?

Thanks for sharing what it is like to be an under-appreciated executive.

Got it: keep your head down, support the company line and cling to survival. At least you get paid very handsomely for that desperate existence.

ExxonMobil destroys everything it touches. Your manager is a backstabbing douche who will/did sell you out to save their own skin. The betrayal biblical in scope.

Face it, all communicators are just relieved it is not them on the chopping block and most managers will feel worse about their reduced remuneration than the employees they let go.

There are no heroes in this situation.

@ljc+18erXxR4 the immature, selfish behavior of people at EM, including many managers, are products of the system incentivizing self-interest and self-promotion above all else.

Truly an ignorant childish rant from a person that represents the worst of EM. You have never been, nor will you ever be, a manager. So, you have no concept whatsoever of what a management position entails.

It might be nice to hide in your little cubicle and snipe at others. But I can tell you, being an exec at EM means you are swimming every minute of everyday with the sharks. It is super competitive and chances of staying an exec and moving further up are slim. Almost inevitably, execs get screwed the most, but you don't hear about it for lots of reasons. These guys have to support the company line whether they believe in it or not. And the layoff decisions were primarily made at the VP level and above, not by managers reporting to them.

But the worst part of the job is having to put up with snotty nosed little cry babies who throw tantrums all day long and contribute virtually nothing. Being in management at EM has become more of a babysitter role than actually leading a group of talented, dedicated professionals. The immaturity and selfishness of much of the workforce is truly shameful.

Damn, y'all really hate your managers. I don't think I'm the only one to think that I work for a seemingly caring and genuinely kind person. Just like not all employees laid off deserved to go, not all managers are evil.

It’s not just executives. CL 28 and CL 29 managers who are in the incentive program do quite well. Not as well as executives, but they do just fine.
