Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Has this happened to anyone else?

So I was given a 1:1 with my boss, he gave me the whole spiel. He also told me that I'll have to work for the next 2 months and I may be required to train another employee. Has this happened to anyone else? I feel like I might be expected to train my own replacement and that’s just wrong on so many levels. I’m so p-ss-d right now I can’t think straight.

Agree it's rough, but the 60 day notice is required because of the category of layoff... So everyone is on payroll at least that long, and the company has selected which folks still need to report between now and then.

@sji+18eRnnAY - There is truly no envy, I'm just posting my observations from someone who worked on the inside but also as an outsider. It's all a shame how things are shaking out. My heart truly breaks. But to be fair, it's a good wakeup call to employees that this is a business at the end of the day. You are just a number and when that number is too much for the business to bear, you will cease to exist as a part of that business. My comment on the pampered and entitled nature of employees still stands ;-).

It’s pretty abusive to require you to work for a few more months in order to receive severance.

Don’t go the extra mile for them during that period. Do the minimum and devote time to what’s next for you (job search, etc.).

@kvn+18eRnnAY - looks like you chose to be a contractor and are now envious of employees.
Employees are tough. But their expectations from the company are different from what the expectations of a contractor are. Just as simple as that.

No offense but toughen up, cupcake. I worked as a contractor for EM as a project engineer for two years.

A few months into the pandemic, I was told with about 6 weeks of notice that I would be replaced by an EM employee who was at that time working on a shuttered upstream project overseas. The training/handover would be about three weeks in person during the middle of a major construction project. Was I happy about it? No, I was not. But I did what I had to do and left on good terms and helped the new PE as much as I could. Did I get a severance? No I did not.

I've got to say that EM employees are some of the more pampered, entitled, and overpaid individuals I've had the pleasure of working with over the years. They really don't realize how good they have it, aside from the horrible work-life balance. It's a business at the end of the day, and business decisions were made. Nothing personal. Once you accept that, you will be more at peace.

I wouldn’t lead any efforts to transition. Leave it on your replacement to set these things up. I am not saying don’t transition. I am saying don’t take the ownership to make sure it was done. Use that time to figure out your next steps.

Seems EM wants to squeeze every drop of juice from you before kicking you out the door!
God bless you!

Keep doing your job, train the replacement and take the severance. You will have a longer time to find a job and will get severance and healthcare. There are no oil industry jobs out there folks, you need to change industries.

Something similar happened to me. I had my 1:1 with supervisor yesterday. She told me that April 30 would be my last day. Between now and then I would help transition my role to GBC. I would get severance after that.
I am not sure if that’s a good because it gives me more time to find a job or if it’s a bad because it takes my focus away from job hunt.
I have the option of saying no to April 30, which means Feb1 will be my last day and I don’t sign the waiver and don’t get the severance. My severance is 6 weeks of pay.
Others in similar dilemma? Any thoughts?

@OP, have you considered requesting FMLA leave for stress/mental health reasons? Download a copy of Form WH-380-E, fill out Part 1, and send to your boss requesting immediate leave. They must honor that, and they have to give you 2 weeks to get a doctor’s note.

I am not from Exxon, but I feel for you guys. It is total BS they have you hang on for 60 days and then let you go with not much severance. What do they expect from people after they lay them off, and then tell them to stick around to train people. Seems to me they want to have it their way only. If you do a critical job maybe you could tell them your terms to train your replacement. This just breeds mistrust, and also think how awkward it is for the person you are training. For all the HR brains it always amazes me at how stupid of policies they come up with. They figure just hand this check over people to get what they want. And then to lay people off right before the holidays says everything that needs to be said about Exxon. It is not like they are some small independent that actually might not have the money to pay employees. I know people that always talked about how they wanted to work for Exxon, and it would be the last place I would want to work. I just can't believe they are treating their employees like this. Good luck to all.

Don’t do it. Find people to give you recommendations right now and do the absolute bare minimum for the next 2 months. You know Exxon is prideful - they won’t be coming to re-hire you if things turn around. Finding a new job is a full time effort and it’s always easier when you’re employed

Fortunate if you can spend next two months looking for job. For once being business critical is a negative.

One of my friends was told they were "business critical" and required to work until February. Another packs up this week.

Seems they are worried about losing your skills. Shows just how deep the cuts are and that your supervisor at least knows the value you add. Too bad decision was several levels above supervisor.

I was told the news and then allowed to go back to my desk and leave when I wanted to unescorted. I drop my laptop off on Friday and then am free. The guy who now has to do his job and mine (s—s for him) did ask me to send him an email with a few bullets on what he needs to know. I considered him a friend do although super awkward I will do it and want the pay yo Feb and severance. After that I don’t have yo go anything even though I kept getting pay and full benefits until February plus severance etc

Just do the minimum.. I didn’t bother with my handover.. and am glad that the company I work for now is much better than EM..

Besides.. no one cares about how well you handed over

No, this was not my experience. I was given the day of the layoff and the following day to collect my thoughts, things, and contacts.

I’m a geo.
