Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I was laid off this morning - AMA

Early morning 1:1 meeting with SDM. I pretty much knew at that point.
SDM started with the sob story and pandemic and then told me I was selected.

I was EMIT - recently rotated into the new role. Ranked really high in my previous role.

My supervisor claims they had no idea I was laid off. Not sure if i believe it or not but it does not really matter.
How can a decision like this be made without the person that I report to having any say?

Luckily, I have other work lined up so it’s fine. But the way this was handled was XOM was extremely unprofessional.

Laptop and phone access was immediately terminated. There will be another layoff in March - will be performance based.

Ask any questions. Happy to answer.

Word got out the other day, among the Selectors.
The Communicators are not happy with the circumstances.
And there are many hungry lawers in Tejas!
More than predicted.

It's true. I am a supervisor and only found out last minute that one of my direct reports was being laid off, and that person was a very good performer. Decisions were made at a higher level, without our input, but then we were told that we should "own" the messaging. Sad, but true.

I am taking December off before starting the new gig.
XOM makes you think twice before you talk to higher ups - never the case anywhere else. Not sure why we treated higher ups like gods

How many years before you joined Xom? Are you taking any time off before your next gig?

My current work is for a company I used to work with before XOM - located in Houston.
Salary is a step up. The least amount of money I ever made was at XOM but again the 401K, pension and other benefits like job security for employees is what sold it to me.
But job security and 401K no longer exist so joke was on me.

If you don’t hear anything by today then you are more than likely safe for this round of layoffs.

Good luck to all!

Why is someone yelling admin on this board? No rules broken. That is humorous.

They are all layoffs no matter what they choose to call it the reality is they have to get rid of a much greater number of people than what they are publicizing and they make the same old stupid decisions because their so afraid of looking weak. So look forward to this toxic stressful environment and poor choices for another couple of years and until woods and his cronies are gone if there is a company left by then.

11 year employee - I went through a bout of depression in the beginning but once you get past the routine shock, it is hard not to look back and say wow, was any of the stress really worth it? That environment is so bad for your mental & physical health.

Thanks for answering questions!
Is your new role a step up or step down in salary? Are you relocating? I'm mostly trying to gauge how XOM folks are adapting to new industries or companies.

Everything has been handled in such a cold and mechanical manner. I guess this is the “new” Exxon.

Question - is the layoff in March our normal PDS review that they’re pushing up early? As the cycle would normally end in March but usually we’d know in July/August (like this year). Or is this just a new round of layoffs?

I was an experienced hire (converted from contractor) and have been with XOM for a total of 5 years. 1 year as a contractor and 4 as an employee.

Only reason I never left before is because of the pension plan. I couldn’t get myself to leave (even for better opportunities)
Kind of feel relieved that XOM laid me off and I can go where I want now

Seems like I missed a question - I don’t have any additional info regarding the involuntary layoff or anything else.
I just know there is another layoff in March. Look for a job and jumó ship as soon as you can.
Exxon was a great company but those days are gone and will never come back

So to answer some questions:

  1. SDM did it over zoom but they did turn on their camera.
  2. I ranked above average/ excellent in every single category.
  3. How I found work so fast? I have a lot of contacts in the industry and I have a very good reputation in the technology that I work in.
  4. As mentioned, if my supervisor didn’t know it doesn’t really make sense how this decision was made. This was a new role for me and I never got a chance to meet any of upper management. Actually, I never even met my SDM in person. Only over zoom.

a harder pill to swallow is that many of the senior managers making the decisions on the involuntary numbers will be retired in 3-5 years...while the ones they let go will still be in the workforce.

I hope they can sleep well at night knowing they made ridiculous decisions for some of these employees

youre story is accurate. Many of the involuntary layoffs were decided at a level 2-3 layers above the person who communicated it to you. Those managers will say "supervisors did have input into this decision through the annual PDS process, SDA, etc" but that's a copout. I know of 2 people in UIS who were let go but where ranked firmly in the top 3rd (or excellent). these decisions were made at a high level and the first line supervisors were stuck making the communication. most of them found out on Monday who would be laid off.

I received a call in the morning from DH and Supervisor. Told me I was selected for involuntary and this is my last week. Will get two more months of pay plus severance which isnt much. I am experienced hire with 3 years with Exxon

I didn't even get any fake empathy. Division manager was talking as if it's a normal meeting while my supervisor didn't say a word. Not even a fake thank you or sorry this happened. I don't really care, but goes to show how unprofessional they are.

Alhtough my situation s—s, I feel bad for the rest of my (now ex-) colleagues who need to take over because we are all swamped with actual work, but of course I'm labeled as a "surplus" while the billion managers and supervisors are very essential.

The sob story made me roll my eyes. He was obviously reading a prepared script with fake empathy. People needs the numbers so they can plan and the communicator didn’t have any of it ready.

Sorry to hear your story and how it was handled. I suspect it was a similar story today for hundreds or will be tomorrow and Thursday. Shame that it has been done the way it has been.
Glad you have something else lined up.

Been hearing rumors about another layoff next year. Heard mostly PIP stuff but also heard
another involuntary round again. Think about it...the cut 1900 jobs and also 8% in July, means a smaller company. The 8% in 2021 will be a smaller number as the company gets smaller. So, an involuntary might be necessary. F&L announced yesterday about non-performance cuts in 2021. Would not be surprised more will follow.

Did your SDM talk about how people are going to be a part of the involuntary program? Not sure if that would
make a person feel better to know they are not the only ones. But just curious if they mentioned it.
