Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Consider applying at independent bookstores

Just some friendly advice from somebody who's been trying to leave for years and has finally been able to get out in November - consider applying at independent bookstores. I know a lot of people avoid doing that for a myriad of reasons but what exactly do you have to lose? After years of being miserable I'm finally happy with my job once again! There are options out there if you decide to broaden your search...

Very bad advice. Two local book stores in my city closed during this pandemic. If yours is still open ,all the laid off/ furloughed/ fired ex Barnsies have already applied and some are working there. Until, of course, they close.

Amazon's book sales have been up 40% during the pandemic and those who have switched aren't coming back to any kind of bookstore.

Great prices, fast delivery , what’s not to love !

It says a lot about the viability of booksellers' prospects that it takes years to find another job.

Bad advice.
My local Indie folded 2 months ago.

Indie bookstores are mostly struggling. The Strand in NYC's revenue is down 70%. Half Price Books has laid off thousands. Meanwhile audiobooks, ebooks, and hardcover sales on Amazon have all been up. Look up how many bookstores have turned to crowdfunding in an attempt to survive. It isn't good out there.

I wouldn't trust them either. Best is to totally get out of retail.
