Thread regarding Cenovus Energy layoffs

What does that mean?

Please explain what you mean by diversity and inclusion being used to decide who gets a role. If all things are equal will someone’s race or gender decide who gets the role. This might be controversial but I don’t understand what you mean by diversity and inclusion being used as a criteria for employment. And I am not being rude but it’s easy for you to say that these will be considered when filling roles but what exactly do you mean? Please explain and please note I am not trying to be offensive but just confused how it will be used. If I am a male in HR which is a female dominated field will I be given preference? What do you mean and how is it going to be used to decide who gets what role?

Diversity and inclusion, I'm all for it but if its my company or team I just want the best person for the job, meaning the one with the best skills, training and personality. put your race cards away, I'm sick of seeing that used as a reason someone didn't get what they want.

Husky had no quotas. Where do you get that information lol. The only 2 thing that might get you promoted are 1) British accent and/or 2) white wrinkled skin

diversity and inclusion is simply PC double talk, latest catch phrase BS. Remember the framework of the sandbox and which levers to pull in the wheelhouse... NOT!

It’s interesting HR hasn’t tried to explain or address this. Because they are afraid of putting down exactly what they mean. Just leave it as vague wording as possible and when people lose their job because of diversity and inclusion it’s hard to legally prove.

Doesn't a company basically have to say they consider diversity and inclusion in all personnel decisions, so as to imply the decisions they make aren't discriminatory? For example, yes 90% of our leadership team are white males, but we considered diversity and inclusion when we hired them (and we knew the optics weren't going to go over well because of said diversity and inclusion considerations) so it's not discriminatory. That's why companies have policies. "We can't be s-xist. See, we have a policy that says so." It's risk mitigation, nothing new. This has been standard operating procedure since the 80's. The only thing that has changed is public perception. If you feel you've been discriminated against, don't expect HR to solve it for you. Talk to a lawyer.

So this is another do as we say not as we do kind of thing from your leadership. Bunch of old to middle aged white guys running the company and then the next layer are mostly a bunch of white guys again but for you employees we are going to push diversity targets on you. I agree with previous posts, let’s see the HR dept clearly lay out how decisions based on diversity and inclusion will be applied to the employees.

Specifically hiring to hit diversity quotas is a form of discrimination in itself. Thats all they're saying. Saw it play out many times at Husky, unless it's senior leadership, then you have to be old and white, preferably named Rob.

I would take it to mean they plan to ensure decisions don’t have an inherent bias with regards to race, creed, gender etc.. The leadership team is hardly diverse so take that for what you will.

It is illegal for an employer to discriminate against a an employee because of his or her race, color, religion, s-x (including gender identity, s-xual orientation), national origin, age, or disability.

When selecting employees the decision should be based on whether they have the education, training, ability, and integrity to do the work.

Saying that it would be interesting to see how Cenovus will use diversity and inclusion in their hiring process. It would not be an unfair question to have HR spell out how they plan to do that. I’m sure they would have gotten legal opinions on how to do this fairly. I would hope.

Ya, husky has quotas for representation and as far as I know those are to be brought over and met in the restructuring
