Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Phrases that mean nothing

I finally got rid of this company and life is finally beautiful now that there will no longer be a superior and his favorite phrase that we need to be “more proactive”. What the hell does that mean? My interpretation is that means you need to leave your soul at this job until you are cut off as if you have never even worked here. I was sick of those undefined guidelines and it will surely take me a few months to recover mentally and forget those manipulative phrases that were nothing but demotivating.

My favorite was the mysterious email that would pop up from my "manager", who never spoke to people, just emailed..."What happened here?" There would be a small description sometimes no claim number...like a puzzle. I was used as the scapegoat of the group...probably because I rarely spoke up. Dispatch was failing because of India but they needed a local reason. Two coworkers would explain that what he thought happened because of me, tended to happen no matter what because of the nature of the GANTT chart. Finally, he put me on UN with no claim numbers on allegedly 2 incidents that I did wrong. I am that person that if I make a mistake, I own it. How does one defend oneself if there are no claim numbers? By the grace of God, the department was laid-off. He was an SOB and I am SO much better off now ! Good riddance after 33 years Allsnake!

But in the video Eric said Transformative Growth was an initiative designed to benefit the customer. Seems like the root cause of this problem is Tom, Glenn and Eric’s failure to clarify they believe shareholders are the customer while the folks who actually purchase Allstate products are simply an after thought.

I know what you mean. I just left after 24 years. Nothing but pressure. Working remote is BS. Outsourcing claims to India and we have to clean up the mess. Total bull!!

Notice he uses the phrase “We” when he means you. This manager would do nothing to get off his lazy arse to be part of the “We” and take some responsibility of his own. Also this type of manager thinks you work for him. The phrase he or she works for “me” is such baloney unless he actually owns the company and nothing but an ego trip. At the end of the day this manager could be next to be let go so all of these games that people play to make themselves look important are nothing but dust in the wind or a mirage. So many people with egos in management positions with Allstate that have no business actually being in management as they lead from the rear. I saw this time after time again after working there over 30 years.

They did leave us front line leaders in the dark. The division managers on up knew exactly what was going on and who was being cut. The assessments were just a front and were not even used and barely looked at. The division managers had to cut a certain percentage from department labor costs. Long tenured employees and high paid areas that they deemed non-promotionable were let go. Also employees that they long wanted to get rid of but couldn't be before were lumped in to make it seem fair.

Everything about being fair, professional, and humane about the lay offs were garbage. Lies after lies after lies. In fact division managers on up who were not themselves directly impacted treated the lay offs as fun and a joke. Our division managers called it "Office Space Live". Other front line leaders in our area did actual office pools and bets who would be let go. Some of them were themselves let go after being lied to being told they were safe. All just horrible from start to finish.

I am lucky to have a transparent leader that shared things as he knew them, or so it seemed. Our well being truly mattered.

I think Allstate even left some front line leaders in the dark. Think about how many were let go?

And now they are realizing they made an ‘oopsie’ and the chat volume is overwhelming and out of control for most reps to handle.. they’re stuck.
Even with hiring new people in at a lower hourly rate than what they paid those laid off, you still have to onboard and train them.. they won’t be as efficient at first.

All for ‘transformative growth’ and saving some dollars. Didn’t seem to work out so well for them.
