So I was laid off as of 11/28, I just got a call from a manager in my office about an opening. It would be a demotion and I’d be taking a 13K pay cut if I went back. I was with Allstate for 11 years. Not sure if I should go back or not. I do have another offer with a much smaller company that’s not insurance related... decisions.....

NO. AFTER 35 years with BTE’s most of my career - I was laid off because I was a good employee and continued to strive to do well in the company. I worked hard to get promoted and great pay - only to have the PAY and PTO be the reason I was let go. I am embarrassed to say I worked for Allstate. Wish I didn’t have to admit to working for Allstate on my resume
I did as well, however I got denied. Oh well!
I would only go back with a pay increase. Every department is heading in the wrong direction. New leadership is needed.

For what it's worth, Progressive is hiring aggressively, and they don't seem to treat their employees like dirt. I just started at Progressive after working for Allstate for over 4 years. I don't know your financial situation, but if you can afford to be out of work for a while, I would say no to returning just based on principle alone.
I actually wanted to be let go during that huge firing session in November from their tRaNsFoRmAtIvE gRoWtH garbage because I hated the direction the company had been going ever since Glenn Shapiro came over. But I stuck it out until I found a better opportunity at Progressive. I don't know your geographic location, so I can't speak for whether Progressive is hiring aggressively all over, but they have been doing so in my area for a while now. Best of luck to you, and please avoid Allstate if you can afford to.
There certainly were Esurance employees who were laid off. There were less than with Allstate, but Allstate also has a significantly higher number of employees.

I would literally rather struggle to pay bills for a while, that deal with a sh*t company.

Isn’t it interesting that Eric Bryant Who came from Esurance and lead this transformer growth plan never mentioned to anyone that the insurance employees were not affected by the layoffs. Oh don’t get me wrong they said they were going to have to do the evaluation but not a single Esurance employee was let go during this layoff
So how many of you criticizing someone going back to Allstate after being laid off made it safely through the layoffs and are continuing to work for Allstate while slamming the decisions of these people to go back. Admit your hypocrisy!
When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time.
Remember they fired you once they can fire you twice. I say, once they said goodbye you should not go back at to a lesser position and at lesser pay. They don't deserve a second chance at your talents. Move on with your life without Allstate.
So easy to go back as a short term fix with the possible belief of security? AllState is a disrupted company so you will experience more uncertainty if you go back. You need to weigh all. Nice you are getting call back and they want you, bad they want to pay you less! Consider all other options.
Think about your future needs too. Go back but keep looking for something better. All of this talk about severance.....severance isn't stability. You don't leave stability. No matter where you go, there are going to be politics, pomp and circumstance. You need to do what is best for your family now , the present, in order to build for the future and not worry about how long the severance will last. The longer you are out of work, the harder it will be for you to find a job you really want. Or an employer who is willing to hire you.
Why go back to a sinking ship? Now you risk being cut again as there will be more job eliminations and cuts in the very near future. Being unemployed you may have qualified for free healthcare from your state. Do not let healthcare be your guiding light. You can also check into a medical share type plan. Many of these jobs are going to end up in India or elsewhere. This company may end up being sold anyway. Get out and stay out and do not underestimate your job skills. Insurance companies are easy to get jobs at.
Like the prior poster I gave up my 18 week severance by taking another position within the company starting about two weeks after my final date. The highly assumed taxed nature (proven by many posts here) of the severance and the costs of getting needed health coverage privately made keeping the severance not worth it. The company matched my pay as well for my new position that I was making before. In this situation keeping the 4 and a half months of severance versus trying to start with a new company and the costs of medical insurance out of pocket until I found other employment and using the severance to live off of was not a good option for me. We are not eligible for unemployment here until after the time period that the paid severance covers in my state. Also there is no guarantee that another company would be at all better than Allstate. Allstate certainly has its issues and poor running but just browse through the nightmares of many other companies housed on this site. Most seem pretty much the same to me and in many cases even worse.
You’d have to repay your severance if you go back. I’d think carefully about giving up 22 weeks’ pay in exchange for a lower-level position with less pay.
Yes I went back already. My kids have to eat and we all needed health insurance. The cost of the Affordable Care Act was not an option. I went from an exempt position to non-exempt but thankfully kept my tenure and number of PTO days. They matched my pay from what it was when I was laid off because my pay level was at the very top of the new positions pay band. I will never get a raise in this position as a result but I plan to move up to other positions of higher band once the restructuring of departments is done and some new positions are opened up based on what we were told. For now I am again tied to a time clock but getting paid the same and much higher than most of my peers starting in this position and the work is much easier and of less stress than what I was laid off from. I'll live with it for now. It worked out better for my current situation than starting over anew. Maybe in the future I will move on somewhere else.
Take the job with higher pay. Also, you'll get more experience in a smaller company that will help you grow your skills. It may be tough in the beginning, but be energized and open to learning and absorbing as much knowledge as you can cause it will help you with any other future job.

Would not go back unless they offered same pay, same job status. If you were happy with your job and were succeeding and don't mind the chaos it may not be a bad decision. Not sure what direction this company is headed though, may be a bottomless pit with no way out soon. There is no trust left with this company they have all but destroyed any remaining shreds.
