If we could just stop polishing PowerPoint

If we would quit polishing PowerPoint presentations all would be well. Why is the polishing PowerPoint example still being cited? I’ve heard it for freaking decades as the example. What a joke. Oh yeah right our leaders aren’t the ones steering this ship into the rocks it’s the rest of us and our poor behaviors and PowerPoint addiction.

I left in August 2018 as a Reservoir Engineer with 2 drillwells in progress in Eastern Canada. Before leaving of my own volition, I was harassed by my supervisor minutes before a presentation to partners regarding drillwell #1. I suffered with anxiety at that stage in my life and simply could not answer her questions in the heat of the moment. I felt like everyone was breathing down my throat there, and it was nerve-wrecking.

Today, I looked at the publicly available information (made public by the offshore regulatory body), and the well I worked on made over 10,000 bbls/d oil for the last two years. The very next opportunity they drilled after I left was the other drillwell I worked on, and that too made several thousand bbls/day of oil, and continues to do so.

Shows how much the management and culture of XOM can wear on you, despite your hard work and dedication to the company. I had no choice but to leave, primarily for my own health.

PowerPoint is an essential tool for choosing top quintile employees with leadership potential.

Our leadership were chosen for their PowerPoint skills and they will choose the next generation of leadership by the same criteria.

If you can create and deliver a flawless PowerPoint then nothing else matters, even if you are an id–t with no practical knowledge or social skills, (except brown nosing) and even if you are taking credit for other people’s hard work and accomplishments in that PowerPoint.

Meanwhile Darren Woods continues to get paid.. worse CEO in the history of EM.. and nothing anyone can do about it!

One of the primary reasons I left EM. There was no longer a motivation to go to work and when I did, there was nothing I brought home to share with family. When any job becomes that because of the employer and their working environment, it is time to leave.

The funny part is how many people are promoted based on being able to give a good presentation.
