Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Latest PIPs are a joke!

How many of you have coworkers who were put on a PIP with no good reason? I know of several people who carry their entire teams on their backs and somehow they need to improve??? What the ever loving f—? The ELT is so desperate to save a few buck they're apparently willing to stab some of their best workers in the back.

@2cio+17y819WF did any of the nsi improve step change wisewhen you told them they were nsi or did they continue to fight?

Yeah I don't know if all assessment meetings were the same, but ours was awful arguing over the NSI's, being handed mandatory numbers and knowing full well what the outcome was for those people. Some of them were good employees but just not quite as good as the folks that squeaked by in NI.
I'll also admit a couple of my NSI's I always thought were bad at their jobs, but they fought and argued so much I never wanted to get into it with them and would avoid conflict. Plus I never expected to have to let them go one day, so I figured "so what" if they're happy riding the bottom third. Why make life terrible telling them all their faults... :-(
Now I know our days of job security are behind us, I'm not holding back. I give my employees direct, immediate feedback about everything they do, good and bad. That way if they still get NSI'd next year I won't feel like I blindsided them.

The discussions that ranked people into the bottom 8% were very difficult - most NSI people started bucketed as good, or even very good. And they are, from any objective external perspective! still, if you took one person up to "NI", you still had to push another person down to "NSI" :(
If you were PIP, you probably were unlucky that others were ranked marginally above you in the very subjective discussions. Hint: don't get promoted in the next couple of years - the next bucket might be more competitive... :(

I know a few very good employees that were pip’d. It was unethical and shameful.

Please Get rid of @rhm+17y819WF first. People that use the term “worthless” to describe other human beings are usually known for their blatant ignorance. You still promote these people and wonder why you are losing.

Out of the 10 or so people that I know got PIPs, 4 kind of deserved it, 3 I was surprised by, and the others I didn’t work with enough.

  • The 4 that got PIP were early career and had a theme of being too quiet, not delivering, and/or just not fitting the “mold”. So I think the company gave up early.
  • The 3 that surprised me were all management track, 1 was actually a supervisor at one point.

Many that I knew that were PIP'd truely were low performing and worthless employees. Sorry that a few good ones were lumped in with the many bad ones.

22 years, excellent pay raises and CL increases. And all of a sudden I was a bad communicator and not a team player. Not worth putting up in that culture. Happy I left.
