I'm yet to meet one and all the people I know - and I know quite a few - never do anything else but complain about their supervisors. So I'm wondering, is this really a company-wide thing or are there people who are happy with their managers? Who find them to be helpful rather than a hindrance to their work?

My 3rd EM boss, German from Gas & Power, asked if I was going to hyphenate my last name when I got married....he said because if I could not make a decision and pick a name that I should get another career (I'm an Engineer). At least he was transparent from the start unlike most. Overall 10% Outstanding, 20% Good and 70% NSI.
Stay out of SeaRiver or F&L if you're looking for a good supervisor or manager. The "game" there is strong. In my time here, I've hardly seen even one provide any value to the company except make a good powerpoint.
I have add 25 bosses in nearly 40 years. All but one TERRIFIC. Some of my former bosses from decades ago are now Company President and Dallas level executives and virtually all are CL 32 + now (or retired). I have had 5 female supervisors, and 10 who were non-US citizens, 4 were heritage Mobil, 1 hispanic, 2 n—rian, 3 australian, 1 brit, 2 canadian, 1 asian, 1 Brazilian, 1 colombian, 6 were geologists (i am engineer). I only had one bad boss (a female that tried to act too much like a male in the oil business..VERY FAKE..Oil men are gentlemen...We respect smart women, but I helped get her reassigned and she eventually quit). Do not forget...Your BOSSES are JUST LIKE YOU. This layoff uncertainty is not easy on them. I fired 7 people in my career and none were fun.
I have a great manager and supervisor. They're not I perfect but the best I've had. I'm worried if they leave, what their replacement will be. There are lots of jerks supervisors out there. I see them in action and hear from my coworkers how awful they are.
The older you get the worse they get, because you already know how it works and you can see right through their tricks. On the plus side: you can easily trick them in return.
Good managers and employees already left. What else are we left with??
Good managers exist. Real leaders not so much. Leadership is not cultivated in our system.
Best supervisor I ever had left the company so yea my opinion is most managers at xom stink. Although there are a few that are transparent and honest but they don't get very high in the company
Current manager is bad and I don’t know if it’s intentional or she’s just clueless. But I’m at 2:8 on the good:bad count.
My manager in EMCC is also great, but I got PIP-Ed with a terrible manager. Feel super fortunate now to have my current manager. I didn’t think great managers existed at XOM but they do :)
Two amazing managers I would do anything for. They were supportive and fought for their people. The rest I would rejoice if they were terminated but they won’t be because they excel at backstabbing to get ahead.
Lots of good managers, lots of bad ones as well. The key point is there are a LOT of managers and unfortunately with how often people move around it can be career-ending when someone, at no fault of their own, ends up with one of the bad ones.
I've only had 1 supervisor who was good. He was 100% clear about the ranking process and what I needed to do to survive here, and was incredibly supportive and had my back. He did dump a lot of work on me which was stressful but I knew it was to help me have enough to put on my PDS. He genuinely cares about his people and we still keep in touch. He was my first supervisor and I naively thought he was the norm. Boy was I wrong - it only went downhill from there!
Mine is good, but I worry about him, he's been here 30+ years. I don't know much longer he will stay. Lots of really awful managers and supervisors waiting in the wings.
@ ExxonMobil and good? Absolutely the worst ones
I have worked for the best leader inside or outside of Exxonmobil while at XOM. I’ve had good ones but here lately I’ve also had the worst manager in my entire life and that wasn’t COVID-19 induced.
Last few bosses in EMCC research have been pretty good.
My manager (Global Projects) is great. Very helpful, genuinely takes an interest in my life. Transparent about the internal EM processes (ranking, salary planning, etc). I guess it’s possible that he’s just really good at playing the game but it’s been a couple years and he hasn’t broken character yet.
I’m in EMIT and I’ve worked for 3 managers that I’d follow into hell. I’ve also worked for 2 that were awful. They do exist
How about this, 90% are disguised managers, 10% are qualified managers.
Disguised managers became where they are today as they, like their managers, li$k their way up.
Lots of great managers in EMIT. Still some really bad ones too, but overall they are good.
