Thread regarding IBM layoffs

GTS (newco) , is it time to leave?

As a GTS emplyee I am considering leaving asap as I can hardly see anything good out of this for NewCo. Question for other GTS emplyees, what is your take on current sitation? Update the CV and get out ASAP?

Left GTS in 2017. Years of layoffs left me taking stock of more important things in life. I realized that our industry is full of opportunity. I continued my career at a phenomenal company. A cloud of anxiety was lifted and I thrived. I modernized my skills and springboarded to a dream job. Believe in yourself.

I was GTS for 20+ years. I thank god I left earlier this year. Life is so much better outside IBM. I chose to retire but still receive job offers based on my experience.

As a courtesy to your past and present customers, after you leave, make sure you inform that you have left, and give them an honest assessment of the future of their contract(s) under whoever remains at NewCo (aka formerly GBS/GTS).

This coming year could witness the beginnings of a veritable implosion of various aspects of the GTS business from customer defections, employees leaving, and revenue erosion. Everyone will be voting with their feet. Since the business plan for Newco (if one actually exists) is a secret, this uncertainty will help to cause the exodus. It feels like Newco is going to be dumped on the side of the road by IBM, so to speak.

Our division head had an all hands in which he begged us to not leave and to consider coming to him and our managers before making any moves internally or externally. That was enough of a sign for me to leave.

Put your resume out there and have your track shoes on to bolt when an offer comes

Maybe these people advocating to "hang in there" are from hr or some managers who can save themselves from layoffs (since it's them who decides or have connections).

I would even urge hardworking employees from other BUs to be prepared for leaving because the $2.3B charge is going to be shared by both ibm and newco.

IF there aren't any layoffs this year, march 2021 will be blooddbath.

I do not think RA will happen this year. Hang in there until next year. Usually job openings starts in January. Meanwhile get your resume ready and network, reach out to companies. If you are working remote don’t waist your time on your IBM projects, just make up excuses like your Internet is down, a tree felt in your house etc. focus on your next career change.

I would stick around. It can't get any worse than the current SOP.
NewCo can/will be dumping a ton of IBM bloat processes and defunct tools.
Once all that IBM fluff is out of the way things can only improve.

This is IBM's way of creating a mass layoff program. It started first when IBM created a new group called IS(infrastructure division) and moved a bunch of people there. They fired more than half of those employees already and now they are creating a whole company based on these very same people. I would definitely get out of IBM. They are a failing tech company in many ways. Also, out of the Faang group, the only company close to a real tech company would be google and amazon(aws), The rest are social engineering companies or one trick ponies like apple and netflix. There's many avenues to explore and FANG plays a very small part.

If one has the skills to go to a FAANG company, or similar, that's probably the way to go.

GTS isn't the same IBM as the one folks think of when they think if the IBM of old that you read about in books... "If you have 100 shares of IBM at 120..."...

Parts of IBM (say Research, Development, etc.) are still somewhat the old IBM thing... But GTS never was, in reality.

Thing is, if the folks that are at GTS had the skillsets the FAANG companies want... they'd be there already.

Almost by definition GTS means "legacy skills". And far as I can tell, there's really never been a real push to upgrade the skillsets of GTS employees.

Those that have been pushed to contracting companies, even less so.

So I'd guess there's a lot of folks just hanging on out of necessity, hoping to make it to retirement. (At least in the US... clearly the dynamic offshore is different.)
