How many real friends do you have at Exxon...

I am talking about folks that would come and help you move or borrow you something valuable...

I have worked with a few great people at EM over the years, both staff and even a couple of managers. But honestly, I have no desire to ever see the other 98% again. Much of this is due to the zero sum game in ranking. It creates enormous unhealthy competition, and I know a lot of people who provide outright false peer reviews to management just to hopefully knock the competition down on the rank list.

One of my "closest friends" accidently sent his peer review of me to myself instead of the manager. Not realizing his mistake, he continued to act like my best friend, but his email proved that he was just another backstabber willing to climb over anyone to get ahead. It's everywhere.

THOSE OF YOU WITH NO FRIENDS MUST BE LOW PERFORMERS. I AM A SLS AND HAVE MANY FRIENDS, BUT I AM NOT FRIENDS WITH LOW PERFORMERS. I DONT WANT TO HAVE TO PIP A FRIEND, SO I SIMPLY DONT ASSOCIATE WITH LOW PERFORMERS.

I was in a similar situation in ICU. You are fortunate to have so many co-workers by your side. I only had two out of 15. It's not a contest, but just saying you are lucky in that respect.

I found myself at deaths door seriously Ill in ICU - and my EM work colleagues gathered around like family. The love they showed me was unexpected and sincere. Don’t underestimate the relationships you have with those you work with.

I thought my supervisor, of all people, was my friend.
when i asked for some velvet wraps on the ankle-cuffs, she got them for my 2nd anniversary with the company.
nothing is easy.

Thought I have many friends at EM. But when I was shown the door, nobody actually cared. Nada.

In my case, probably just 1. I am one of those PIP'd in July and when I was there and when I left, many of them expressed sympathy. I was touched by that. However, a few weeks after that, only 1 bothered to continually ask how I am doing. So only 1 for me.

Does having them as friends on Facebook count????? What about LinkedIn?????

Honestly I have friends from work. We were like a 2nd family but then we moved on to other roles and drifted apart.

I had maybe 2 ? I thought I had 3, but one became a manager a few years back and didn't want to know me afterwards. Considering we had known each other 15 years, used to joke about management "drinking the Kool-Aid" and (I thought) respected each other's technical abilities ... I was gutted. His abrupt turnaround does make me think there is truth in the rumor that successful people at EM take a spiked drink, or maybe they do implant a chip in people's heads.

@bue - I remember that happening in CSR. To be honest, it happened in Lubes Technology as well. Pretend you like a senior manager and pretty soon, you'll be going up the ranking as well.

I worked for several companies including EM. I dont have more or less from EM or other places I have been. Lets be fair and why do we even need this discussion? What is a point-EM is so bad so you cant even have friends? Then go to Chevron, BP, etc. and enjoy your life. EM has good and bad things like everyone else but overall it is very similar to all other majors with some + and -.

If you work at Corporate Strategic Research in Clinton New Jersey. The answer is Zero.

There are all sorts of fake researchers and managers. Sectionheads and leads are useless and love showing their extra friendly behavior towards useless management. This is as far as fake friendship goes.

Someone organized birthday cake for a lab director using a small group of s—ers at work. Next thing that person is a leader/manager/supervisor. Friendliness towards right person goes a long way. Rest can be crushed.

A couple. I think there is nothing special or specific to EM about this - I think this is a general function of modern times - folks are more self centered, mind their own business. There is nothing good or bad about it.
