Thread regarding Pratt and Whitney layoffs

Older Engineer Purge???

seems in my department if you were 55+ and not chief or supervisor the risk of getting laid off was high. low performers were not at the top of the list as one might expect.

Doesn't everyone at P&W have a pension?

How many people let go had pensions? A lot of aviation companies are letting the folks with a pension go to reduce liability.

how do I know their performance??? as one of the senior members of the group, I provide feedback to my manager on other members of the group, I know their technical expertise as I mentor most of them, theIr proficiency level, proficiency executing tasks in general and how that should stack up per their salary grade level. It’s not that hard and no I’m not HR.

The LDR process is total b—s—. rankings are not based on facts, it’s a popularity contest. mgrs say one thing to the employees & then go into an LDR meeting and say something different. This is why the process has been conducted under a veil of secrecy.

Really comes down to a mix of how your organization views your performance. If they had to make choice of who was in the bottom 10% would you be in it or not? They arent going after high performers or high potential employees.

Older usually means higher salary band. Performance also indirectly translates to that too, since "low performers" don't get promoted or merit pay increase. How many of your 55+ engineers were P3? How many P4+ people in your dept do you actually think got Cs on their LDRs? People who were eligible for the second VSP should have seen the writing on the wall, especially those not direct charging.

Well, based on my department statistics, 0% 55+ layoff, and how do you know performance, are you HR?

ahh, the total nonsense HR reply. based on my department statistics the people laid off, 55+ made up 40% of those let go yet they were easily less than 10% of the department’s individual contributors. There are still poor performers who were at a lower proficiency and work out levels still employed today compared to some of the 55+ age group let go. no wonder it took HR and Legal well over a month to ok the layoff list.

Our division was spread age and experience-wise. I believe you, though.
