Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Life After Exxon

For those looking for other opportunities, what are the most attractive options? Other O&G companies? Renewable energy companies? Pharma? From what I’ve seen, O&G provides the best compensation unless you’re willing to go back to school, which has a high opportunity cost.

Life after EM is a blessing, not having to be monitored by micro manager, attend to meaningless regional meeting led by a clueless LT who never chaired the meeting and shared matters related to controls and tones of rubbish, no value added to the organisation and this LT is worried sick that her position will be gone soon.

@agw+17phVrvM

would you be open to describing what you mean by “healthcare role”?

do you mean in a hospital? insurance company? pharmaceutical manufacturing? biologics manufacturing?

thanks!

This is what I’ve told my kids..... liking what you do and who you work for are far more important and satisfying than compensation. You don’t need a 5,000 sq ft home and luxury cars to be happy, nor do you need extravagant vacations.
As for industry, think about things that can’t be offshored. Healthcare seems logical for that as I’ve seen a few post about.
Good luck whatever you do!

To some degree depends on your degree/experience. May take a year or two to get where you want via new company, and internal job transfers.

I lateralled over to Healthcare in a PM role and then in the proceeding year was able to build connections and get into my dream role.

Honestly wish I would of left way earlier. I spent soo much time debating leaving and not taking action. The grass is significantly greener IMO.

I joined healthcare industry and I love it. We just had dept meeting and the Sr director reviewed the employee satisfaction for her dept and it was extremely positive with a high respondent rate compared to the company (which was also high). Contrast that to me experience at xom which seemed to have very low ratings.

There was someone I spoke to a long time ago, and he told me "money doesn't make you happy but it makes your easier." And easy life has less stresses and you will have more opportunities to make you be happier indirectly. Being financially stressed is no fun, paying the bills, looking after families and healthcare and education etc has a significant cost. Think longer term and keep the bigger picture in mind.
Money makes people indirectly happy through access to a higher quality life, freedom and life experiences that open other doors. You cannot put a price on freedom.
As for O&G, it has been pretty cyclical in the past and the now that renewables and shale provide alternatives and ample O&G supply, oil prices will be capped and job security will be lesser. Having said that, I am not sure if TECH will offer you any job security either because it is hyper competitive and you will compete against foreign applicants on H1B as well as offshored locations.
I would say pharma or power business seems more stable, compensation should not be too bad I think especially once you consider the cyclical nature of O&G.

Faang is hard to get interviewed into unless you have a referral or they reach out. Studying for the interviews is also a multi month to year+ process by itself. If you have the aptitude go for it. Maybe avoid amazon since they PIP regularly.

You won't be paid higher unless you go to IT. that's the only reason I am still here. PhD.

Not true that O&G provides the best compensation package. Move to another industry other than O&G. FAANG offer better compensation than EM. Other Fortune companies have bonuses and stock option, etc. But I suggest looking beyond money. Happiness is doing what you really like to do, not how much you make.
