CEOs who follow the trend should get much less pay.
CEOs who made significant mistakes should just take home $400K.

The KGB top brass grabbed the resources of their country for themselves when the Soviet Union ran out of money and collapsed, while ordinary Russians struggled to buy food. History repeats itself. This time at EM. The CEO and top executives are protecting their dividends and bonuses while running the company to ruin.
A successful CEO can have the same (speeches, books...etc), think Bill Gates. Just more reason not to pay CEO million dollars, if they are successful there are many ways they can get paid (not using company money)
The president will get much higher pay once his job is done through speeches, books, and other perks. Also the immediate family members get a lot through and after presidency. Finally the salary is only small portion of the benefits, all that flight using airforce one for vacation, free medical, free meals, royal treatments at foriegn countries , etc is worth millions every year.
Because they, along with board, set their pay. Look at the pay of CEOs across the board in the O&G industry... layoffs, capital destruction in share price, negative earnings yet the c-suite is still making a k–ling. What else would you expect?
The CEO gets a retention bonus if the company goes bankrupt. That's an incentive to drive the company into the ground.
I'm getting a sense for what it might have been like working at Stasi HQ when the GDR was going bankrupt. Not that it was ever fun to work for the Stasi (except for the management), and now it's grotesque. As the management frequently reminds employees, if you don't like it here, you can leave. That's just about the only difference between this place and the Stasi.
