So why are recs being opened to bring back highly skilled individuals let go in May, if they had retired in the job? Could it possibly be expertise, company memory and industry networks were lost? Makes me go hmmmmm.

@300% sounds about right. Glad y'all are doing so well without us "retired on the job" experienced folks now making more money (in some cases a lot more money) elsewhere, if indeed you are a TS at GAC. So I hear you have all the help you need and have extra people sitting around with nothing to do? Must be a freaking paradise in the RDC these days.!

300% sounds about right. Probably good enough to keep the lawyers at bay. If I can keep 2 smart, motivated kids with the potential to stay at the company for another 2-3 decades for $65K each vs culling a $130K guy who’s been retired on the job and just trying to ride it out until retirement based on his glory days. Well....

@typically not leave due to family situation - Bull sh–. I am in my early 50's. All my kids are grown and flown. I don't have to boo-hoo, stay home and homeschool in the pandemic. I can show up to work everyday. I worked my a– off for that company. I did an analysis of the ages of the TS 2s and 3s in my severance package. If you were 50+, you were 300% more likely to have been let go. Fortunately, I worked my network and landed in a better paying job with far better benefits. Just hated to leave Savannah. Wanted to stay long enough to retire there. I wish my former company and remaining colleagues luck...management makes such short sighted cuts with some of the best talent in the business under their noses, they are going to need it.

The last lay-off was many under 35 years old as well as above 50. They kept the TS2 and 3 that would typically not leave because of family obligation...

Why leave money on the table? You could potentially get a severance package. If I was concerned about being let go, canned, fired, RIFed, right sized, etcétera... I would take all of my personal belongings home. Update my resume and apply while waiting to get the call. I might get a severance package especially if the start date is flexible. If you do not get the call and are content at your current position you can always stay and decline the new job offer. However, if you do not get the call and get a better job offer you may be able to leave. Your former team may be in a bind for a few days or weeks but, oh well so are those that got the call.

I've learned a very hard lesson. I've learned that the more you help your co-workers, the more your co-workers will come to ask you for help, and eventually they want to put that job on you because you are so good at it. And they will think and say that's your job. When you feel it's TOO much, you don't want to or can't help them anymore, they will hate you.

I've learned that nowadays employees are not valued by their hard work, but by having "good social skills". The more people spend times to go around and talk and talk and talk about non-work related to show that they have life out of work and how important they are, and whisper with each other about this person, that person, and ask others how they are doing to show that they have "concerns" and "care" for others, the more they are valuable. Haha.

So, if you don't know how to slow down and go around to talk with your co-workers, you are stupid. Nobody likes you. You have to learn to go with the flow. You can never finish big workloads coming continuously all the time anyway. The work is always there. Over all, if people don't do their work productively, that's not your problem. It's the management's problem because they don't value the hard working employees; they value the socializing ones more. That's the world.

Amen to that. Aerospace, other than Boeing, because well, it is Boeing, is hot. I will never forget as long as I live getting that sh–ty call firing me over the phone during a pandemic. You don’t want to get walked out and you don’t have to. Get out on your terms now. before it happens to you.

The over 50 thing is real. It’s not considered age discrimination if they choose to preferentially keep the 30 year olds and fire the 50 year olds, because the 50 year olds make more $. This is according to the employment lawyer consulted when laid off in May. It’s call the “but for” standard. If they would keep you “but for” your age, That’s age discrimination. Thats not what happened. They just fired the 650 program people because we were too experienced and thus too expensive.

THIS IS SUPER IMPORTANT!!! 50 year olds, especially TS engineers from earlier programs, start looking now! Your days are likely numbered given GACs hatchet history. Moog, Lockheed Martin, Northrop are hiring. I’m resettled, but am still getting HR and head hunter calls. Most TSes hacked in May have been scooped up and have landed well, but some of us were competing for the same jobs in those first days. Beat the rush with your resumes BEFORE the next blood letting.
