Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Everybody is leaving

Even before Covid, all of the 10-15 new hires that hired in 2018 with me were very disappointed with the company. Zero job satisfaction. Not empowered. Garbage authoritarian culture. Lack of meaningful work experiences. Investment in Software, technology, and work flow improvements are 20 years behind. Etc etc. I know of 2 people that have hired in since 2018 (out of maybe 20-25 in my department) that genuinely enjoy the work (traditional chemical engineering roles). Most are actively applying to other industries and/or applying to business school. Covid has greatly accelerated an already inevitable outcome. These are people that probably would have stuck around a few years for the pension but are now trying to gtfo. Several have already left. Many more will follow. The company is facing a major talent crisis as it is axing experienced employees, halting recruiting, and seeing major attrition in the 2-5 year range. Also, everyone I know (including mid and late career) seems to think this is an icky industry. The cognitive dissonance is palpable. The older ones can’t leave but the younger ones will.

This is an excellent post by @kti+179shOAj, it deserved to be in a thread of its own.

Let's get real any form of real talent will not come within 1000 m of joining EM. Fraud eventually starts to stink enough for everyone to know.

When oil price was high, the company was sitting on piles of cash so it can afford to create those useless positions. You only find out who’s been swimming naked when the tide goes out.

A reminder - Chemical Engineering is NOT 'Oil and Gas'.
ExxonMobil is nothing but Rosy-smelling Lubricants for the 'M's, and Gas-lighting for the 'PT's.
Get Out!

@biy+17cjz5Le - don’t be such an a-hole. We all know that many very good people have been NSI’d, by an unethical manipulation of the ranking system. Like me, they are not and never have been “poor performers”. It’s a lay-off, disguised as a performance improvement exercise.

If you want to troll people, stick to Twitter or YouTube (when you’re not on Grinder !)

BP cutting 10,000, Shell cutting 9000, chevron cutting 8000. XOM did not cut in 2016-2017 (in fact the company headcount grew 5000), so XOM has some catching up to do. XOM needs to cut about 15000 over next 2 years (mostly MPT). It is not a layoff...it is a workforce reduction by cutting the lowest performers with no severance payments. Getting costs down will improve the career outlook for the survivors.

@nen+17cjz5Le you need help man. you're so angry at a well-reasoned post on a LAYOFF site. Even if you're a troll, you should still seek something for those anger issues.

Great post, thanks for posting. I cannot agree more. I took the 3 month pay option not to sue and left 2 months ago. Got a nice new job. Much happier. I emailed EMRE many good ideas that were cutting edge and novel. They never responded, showed zero interest and though all my control room operators and engineers gave me rave reviews I was given the PIP option that I refused and walked away. Yes you are absolutely right- unless you are older like me and I got my excellent pension, had I been under 40 I would have run away a long time ago. I wish all engineers would leave with only managers remaining! All the layers and layers of managements with no engineers! Then the managers can tell each other to hold on to hand rails and generate wonderful new LPOs, NLIs and QIs and pat each other on the back who has more QIs. ExxonMobil s—s down to the most toxic sewer. I allowed myself to suffer for 24 years and got the pension. Otherwise would have left a long time ago. Now with the current climate, pension may be gone in the future who knows? And there is little incentive for younger ones to stay. Managers can never leave, they will never get a job outside ExxonMobil as their skills are useless, there are no skills. I worked in other companies before and other companies do not have these useless jobs that ExxonMobil creates - SLSs and higher ups are job positions not existing outside ExxonMobil. No surprise ExxonMobil is inefficient as they pay for positions not existing in other companies. And then if you are a novel and creative idea generator you are axed. If you are a YES-man brown-noser you are promoted. How can the company be competitive with all this?
