A publicly-traded biotech is laying off 84 employees in Morrisville.
Catalent Pharma Solutions LLC (NYSE: CTLT) filed notice of the job cuts with state officials on Tuesday. The layoffs, happening at Catalent’s Pharma Drive facility in Morrisville, go into effect Jan. 2 and are “expected to be permanent,” according to the notice.
“All affected employees have been notified of their separation dates,” the notice, signed by Debbie Tucker, director of human resources, says.
The layoffs impact jobs across the spectrum, but more than half of the positions, 46 in all, are described as falling under “operations technician.”
Catalent did not immediately return a request to comment on the layoffs Thursday.
The New Jersey company, which provides life sciences services and manufacturing, had been growing in Morrisville, where it houses its Center-of-Excellence for Analytical Services.
The site, according to the Catalent's website, handles more than analytical projects, also serving as a major site for Catalent’s inhalation business, with product development and manufacturing services for items like nasal sprays and metered dose inhalers.
Catalent, with 300 employees in Morrisville and more than 11,000 total, ranked as the 15th biggest biotech firm in the Triangle earlier this year. It's stock was trading at $102.49 Thursday afternoon, slightly off from its 52 week high of $103.87.
The layoffs bring the total job cuts reported to the state through WARN notices this year to nearly 30,800.
