Obviously if you are not retirement eligible wait until next year but, seriously, start looking now. Get your resume up to date. Nothing good can come from staying if you have the slightest chance of getting the axe in the next round of layoffs. Criteria for getting laid off:
50+
Make a decent salary
Band 8 or above
Have someone in your group who is at least a decade younger and makes lots less than you.

I kick myself that I waited too long to escape. It took 5 months from when I got my notice in May until the end of October to find a job and it was not easy. But, I am seriously a lot happier not having to look over my shoulder all the time and waiting to get whacked.

Although it is hard right now to contemplate a big change like leaving IBM, start looking for jobs NOW and the ball is still in your court. Wait, and you leave it up to "them". And "their" track record s—s.

There's hardly anyone left in the US to layoff. They moved all positions to India. There are multiple teams in GTS where they need to hire new people, and they can't find the skills they need in India. They know qualified employees in the US who are about to lose their jobs, but they can't hire them because they are only allowed to hire in India. When Arvind became CEO he completed the transition to India Business Machines.

Yes, but if you get RA now they usually give you one month and next month is December. I think if you are in the US enjoy your holidays. Things for you will come next year. Here in Europe is different.

IBM wants this restructuring to go faster. Our management team has told us a major re-org will happen in Jan. We have seen GBS folks get PIP’ed via the bench management process in Nov, and could see it spill over. I suspect you are correct about no Nov GTS actions, BUT this is not your fathers IBM, and they are desperate for results as 4th q is coming up light.

Dumping people now in the US could make sense, You worked all year, expecting 401k match ? Not if you get dumped by years end . They did not make that change for the good of the worker bee.Take Take take, used to be such a great place to work ,

I do not think RA will happen in the US one week before the US holiday Thanksgiving. You are safe until next year. Here in Europe it is a different story.

Anyone know if they will be cutting contractors to a large degree?

GTS has a fair population of contractors, so many of us are wondering where we stand.

If Europe is the template, then it’s most likely around 25% of the GTS workforce. With the May workforce reduction, there may be less impact now.

You know GTS will be needing a complete makeover before getting spun off.
Bringing any IBM bloat along would be lunacy. They'll have plenty of fat to trim IMO.

Just a guess, RA Thursday is 11-19-2020, coming up this week.

I have not view into it. Just historically, seems RA Thurs. is 4 weeks after Earnings Announcements.

Of course NewCo spinoff changes things. Hard to say how exactly, at least for me as someone down in the ranks of the tech workers.

IBM has accelerated their restructuring plan (see IBM informing the European work councils concerning GTS and GBS) That same restructuring will come to the americas in the Dec and Jan time frame. NOTE the restructuring of IBM’s current go to market strategy will also be addressed. Enterprise fortune 1100 accounts are the focus, and everything else is out. Power and storage will be impacted greatly. IBM wants all restructuring done by end of June.
