Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Raises

I know it is probably inappropriate to ask but have any of the survivors heard anything about raises during this performance cycle? I know it s—s but I had the best review that I have had in 15 years and would like to get a raise. Especially now that I have to do more work.

Even if you move up a CL it will only be 5% raise and nothing else

Raises were given out last month for previous years assessment. This cycle, any raises would be given in January (which is likely to be zero unless you moved up a CL level).

Most people are paid 10 to 20% above the market, so no pay raise for the majority. A few people who are underpaid will get pay raises to bring them up to their salary curve. Most of you will get nothing for 3 to 4 years, just like the last time oil prices crashed in the middle 1980s and middle 1990s. IF you survive layoff, pray you do not get PIP next year and pray XOM does not CUT your base salary. From now on, I expect bottom 3% to PIP every year...Which means many of you will drop a quintile every 5 years even if you survive.

Raises were given out very quietly last month to the chosen ones. I expect this will continue for the next several years - no raises and PIPs for the masses and raises for the chosen few.

Heard that salary increases for 2021 are gone even for executives. Note that DW did not say that executives will forfeit their bonuses thou. This was already confirmed in May.

In a smaller company, this scenario took place:

  • Employee: Sir, I understand I'm being paid less to do the same work as others on the team. I think I deserve a raise to be fair.
  • Boss: Yes - it is true. You are paid less than the others. But if I give you a raise, then the others will also ask for a raise. And then we'll be at the same spot.
  • Employee: I see. I didn't think about that.
  • Boss: And that is why you are paid less. Because you don't think.

@jux+17Pd1ecT:

Pay raise next year is not likely. Maybe the company will throw a couple of bucks at the top 5-10% to be able say there is salary treatment in 2021.

Longer term, the outlook will be bleak for many employees since individual salaries are tied to performance ratings. Performance ratings are RELATIVE each year. If 20%+ of the employees in your work group are gone next year, most of the remaining employees must slide down the rating list. This means an Excellent employee in 2020 may very well be a NI or below in 2021. The lower rating reduces your salary reference which means you are “overpaid” and ineligible for salary increases.

The combination of the above performance rating impact and the competitive salary environment (other majors holding back on variable pay) will result in little or no salary treatment for the majority for some time.

So, be happy you still have a job (this will be the company’s employee engagement strategy for the next few years) and live within your means. Also, now is a good time to gird yourself for a disappointing relative performance message in 2021.

I received a 7% raise in May and a PIP/PiL letter in July.
So there, OP, count your pennies and pound the pavement.

Silly walk your high value self just for fun.

It's a fair question to ask. The next couple months are going to be stressful for everyone and life-changing for some, but ExxonMobil will be around for at least a little bit longer. With all the threads here talking about people that are spending their entire days looking for jobs, there may be an attempt to incentivize the top folks that are still around.

After my last transfer I am definitely not overpaid. If I was not on the hook for a year I could go to work for a competitor for 30% more pay even though I was at the top of the pay scale where I came from. I've already been getting recruited.

I really just wanted to know if it was possible we might get a raise to offset the loss of the premium this January.

Also I am not a troll. I am just not great at being sensitive. Once again sorry for the offense.

OP is a troll, but it should be noted salary increases are a thing of the past.

Our base salaries take into account the variable pay provided by our competitors. Variable pay is driven by profits and variable pay will be zero. This means our salaries will high relative to competition. So, ExxonMobil employees will not receive pay raises for several years. Get used to it.

The survivors will still have a job (for the moment) but no savings match or salary increases. Job security will be tenuous at best as the industry continues to contract. Despite what the company is saying now, those under 50 should be worried about the future of the Pension Plan.

Can’t believe it, I too had best appraisal in years but will be pleased to keep job, not sure I would want to accept a rise when people are loosing jobs, the guy who posted this is already over paid compared to other sectors so very insensitive, is he / she brave enough to post salary ?

In one of the many posts I read that they lowered the pay scale substantially (to align with competitors). If you have been there 15 years you are more than likely being paid over the current/new pay scale for your group and will not get a raise for quite some time/years.

I heard from a manger that only outstanding with distinction would be getting a small raise. I also talking to someone in the Planning department and they currently do not have any money allocated to raises in their estimates.
OP, if you were outstanding with distinction this year (which is like 2-4% of people), you might get a raise.

It is distasteful to add this topic on a site full of people losing their jobs and experiencing hardship. It is also hard to believe your not a troll but the trolls can usually do better than that so I’m going to go with tactless and classless on this one.

We don’t have to be so mean. Everyone is worried and leadership is a joke.
OP, they tell us of course there are no raises but there are people that go to lunch with the right managers that get $10k-$20k raises while others get $.70 raises so I would say it’sh– or miss.

This may be a layoff website, but many current employees are here posting anonymously because we can't elsewhere. Maybe if you can't understand why that is, that is why you were PIP'd earlier this year.

There is a FAQ. Good to know

Disclaimer: I'm not in HR. But the FAQ made it abundantly clear to not expect any raises. My expectation is the only people getting raises would be those advancing to a higher CL, placing them on a different salary curve.

Sorry to offend but it is a valid question that I would prefer to ask people who might know anonymously. Not to mention I have went through 3 foreman in a year and don't want to ask the new one because he is scared sh–less.

Really?!

Where is your compassion? Think these thoughts to yourself, fine - but really, coming to a site where those who've been recently laid off get to vent, and saying this, is a new low in my opinion.
