Leaving Layoff Early??

Does anyone know if we find out we are laid off Dec. 1-15 if we could leave prior to Feb 1-15 if we find another job? For many people, only around a month or two of severance is going to be covered which offers a very small window of overlap between one job ending and another starting, and I was wondering if we found something sooner that wanted us to start immediately if we could choose to leave early without having to formally resign.

Seems odd if laid-off employees are required to stay working for two months to receive lay-off benefits when those employees will be simultaneously looking for other jobs and many jobs want you to start right away after accepting an offer. Wasn't sure if anyone knew about this?

You're very lucky with the timing of layoffs so that your severance is delayed to 2021.
My company just did layoffs and severance equal to 6 months salary comes as a lump sum on Dec 15th.
That increases my 2020 income by 50%. That puts me into the highest tax bracket plus loss of most itemized deductions due to ATM. So roughly 40% of my severance will go to taxes.

The FAQ states that employees will have a planned desperation date for approximately 60 calendar days after notification (Feb 1-15).

The day you are notified will be your last day working in the office. You will be on the payroll for a couple of months, but you will not be working. In the past, when they fired someone, they did it late on a Friday. They would have someone pack up your personal things and mail them to you. I’m not sure if they still do it that way, but there was a running joke in my group. If the boss schedules a late meeting on Friday with you, don’t accept the invitation.

Rumor is that the day you are notified is the last day in office; just on payroll through January; part of the 60 day notification period. Also nice that it prevents the severance allowance from being part of this year’s taxable income.
