Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Timeframe?

How long were you all at Optum before being let go?

I was only there for 5 years with nothing to show for it.

Next job, I’ll make sure my PTO rolls over continuously.

That’s a nice cushion to have when you can cash it out when you leave after years of service.

Was there for 12 years didnt get any severance . They told us of a meeting on Friday AM, and said we are no longer needed. Had 1 hr to pack up under the watchful eye of a $13 hour security clown. That's our reality corporate US

if you received unpaid/unused pro are you in a state that requires the to be paid out? Haven't experienced or seen unused PTO being paid out in Minnesota.

25 years and then let go with hundreds of others because someone in the glass tower didn't like telecommuters. Was paid severance plus any remaining PTO balance up to 40 hours, also received any money paid into employee stock purchase that hadn't been used to purchase stock yet. Best thing that ever happened to me! UHG was once a wonderful place to work but in the past 5 years or so it got really miserable and all they care about is the $ and their shareholders. And don't forget the extremely way overpaid CEO, nobody needs to make that much off the backs of their underpaid employees.

Was there for 14 years and laid off. Had security watching us like a hawk. We look forward to the day when nobody gives a sht abt the that place. When it is powerless; when its 'values' are regarded as disgusting and anti-human. When it is recognized for what it was, a huge mistake, and when its citizens are rightly regarded as little more than frivolous clowns.

I was RIF’d after 14 yrs and being told I was safe and had nothing to worry about. My team was high performing and I had high NPS scores., but I was not a yes person. Those are the ones they kept. I am in a much better position with better and cheaper benefits, I also have union protection now.

I have been here over 15 years. While those around me get laid off who have been here a less years, or those who are smarter than me get RIF'ed, I am still here. I try to get laid off or fired, and I keep getting told "no"!! Why Optum, Why???? Put me out of this misery of a company, soon!!! Please!!

The daily if not hourly pressure to maximize stock price in the company produces these problems. The VP task is simple. Do whatever it takes to maximize stock price up to the point that you have a mass exodus of people and refusal of new folks to enter the company. And when you have the best stock price, you have to maintain it. That means more layoffs and less benefits. The more money the company makes the more money it needs to make. The CEO knows a drop in earnings means they are gone. So are all the other high paid VP. They have one job and that is max earnings at any cost. It is not about making a profit, it is about making the highest profit versus competitors. And they hire VP who will do the cutting. Nice people can never run a public company since they would not survive the shareholders demand. After all, you are owned by shareholders. This is not personal. This is all about wealth creation. I know what you are thinking. I wish I could be a VP making all that money. Be prepared to be brutal and insensitive and you will go far. I was told by a VP to get rid of folks and I said are you kidding, and she said no. It is about money. You have to do the work with less people. At least she said he was sorry. Then the employees were let go. Then she left to another company making more money while the employees are getting paid unemployment.

Only a few states have that protection. UHG would love to change that if they could. If you have that option absolutely save your PTO when you can, so you have that cushion.

UHG PTO payout upon termination is governed by state law. For California an employee can accrue 1.5 of their annual allotment and it must be paid out at termination. I had a coworker who set up on her email auto response that she was taking PTO until a set date and that date would be her last day with the company. No formal notice. Made sure she used her PTO before her last day and not taken advantage of. The VP didn’t know she was gone until an SVP got the email reply and asked who will be taking over her projects. LOL. Bad for me because I had to takeover most of her work.

How nice. They don't pay out YOUR hours. US employees have very few work rights and protections compared to other more developed countries.

Payout of accrued PTO is typically regulated by state law. In California, it must be paid to the employee when employment terminates. Other states don't not have this law and employers are free to not pay anything.

One other interesting thing that I have heard is that if you give notice that you are leaving, you will no longer be allowed to take PTO, so if you have a bunch of PTO saved up in a state where it won't be paid out to you, try to take your time before you give notice!

I was employed 7 years in California with Rx. Was paid my entire PTO accrual which was 1.5 of my annual allotment. About 8 weeks. Also left with UHN stock. Not bad at all. Most importantly have my experience and memories. What a wild ride. Boss messing around with one of his managers. Employee wrongful termination lawsuit that required speaking to company hired attorney. Discrimination and retaliation all the time. Boss and his mistress threatening and harassing the staff all the time. There’s so much better out there. So many stories to tell. Not sure why I stayed for so long. The smart ones left the department. A few just walked out without notice. Move along.

You do realize Optum doesn't pay out PTO when you leave. Every year you can roll over 40 hours so you can't stack it either.
