Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

My opinion on HR and Law

If I were in HR or Law and was part of the planning and legalese for the layoffs, I’d be ashamed to call myself a human being. It is really sad that the criteria for keeping your employment is so vague that there is nothing objective about it. At least I can hold my head high and be proud of my integrity whereas no one involved with the layoffs can claim integrity or empathy as one of their core values.

I agree the whole layoff process is terrible, but would you rather the company lose even more money to lawsuits because they didn't conduct a detailed legal review of the process before implementation?

Co-worker in Law group (location withheld) indicated to me some Environmental Regulatory assessments underway since 2019 needed to be put on hold.
So she could work on some Employment law through the end of the 2020.
This was in July.

It now sinks in for me -
a Regulatory Law specialist is working on Employment Law for awhile.

I'm a Scientist, but let me do your taxes for you.

HR and Law had nothing to do with this - other than vetting and background setups.
And neither HR or Law is more competent than the rest of the administrative and management arm(s) of EM. Mediocre minds and talents across it all.

eXXon - sign of the double cross. don't you know.
And the only 'major' stock down on the market today - election day.

Agree. It is not law. They are usually very helpful and did not dream up this ridiculous ranking scheme.

Many of us over the years have been forced to stick with and represent unrealistic projections like startup timing and budget needs just because our bosses insisted because they wouldn't man up and tell the truth until the last minute.

Just about everyone but DW does what they are told, even if they don't agree with it, believe it or like it. If you don't, you may be a martyr, but also unemployed. Applies to Law as well. Cut them some slack.

I am not so positive on HR and their role in all of this because they have always supported the horrible ranking system, but by and large the EM lawyers are good people doing their job to make sure whatever MANAGEMENT decides is sound on a legal basis. Maybe the most senior legal managers at HQ are in on the design, but for the vast majority of EM lawyers, they are simply carrying out instructions from their bosses. And I guarantee you that most of them don't like it.

Blaming law for everything is like blaming the boiler men on the Titanic for hitting the iceberg. Yes they kept the engines going, but they weren't steering the ship, and neither is Law.

They are some of the most professional and helpful people at EM, and you would know that if you had ever really worked with them instead of babbling blind rage. I was always glad to have them with me at partner meetings.

Don’t blame HR, they’re just there to do the bidding of management

HR came up with this cunning and underhanded way of ranking people in the bottom 10 based on fabricated excuses like negativity. They tweaked their already garbage-in-garbage-out ranking system to fire NSI and the new hires among the NI, refusing to call it a layoff and circumventing WARN. They fired people for asking questions, reporting harassment, or even being older or too new, to avoid pension payouts and 401(k) vesting. They are just there to defend the management and take care of their own careers. The managers are just there to implement this ranking system, defend their managers and take care of their own careers. The company is failing as a result... big surprise.

Don’t blame Law, their job is to make sure what the company does is legal.

The criteria for staying employed is to be in one of the management positions deciding who gets cut. Simple as that!

Cool. Now hold your head high as you're waiting in line for unemployment.
