Outsourcing Production to TSMC - Oh F*ck

https://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/2020/11/intel-contemplates-outsourcing-advanced-production-upending-oregons-central-role.html

Read between the lines and get ready, Oregon. This was inconceivable just a few short years ago, yet here we are. Of course, leadership and HR will try to put the best spin on this, but the bottom line is that the cuts will be painful and deep. Slowly, quarter by quarter, with no big cool layoff name like SET or ACT, just thousands and thousands cut as Intel tries to turn this ship around and stay profitable.

If you think the fear and uncertainty are high now, just wait. If you were thinking of jumping ship but were waiting till this pandemic Is over, I'd revisit this idea. Consider that you might be competing with 20k other Intellites looking for work at the same time just as our country, economy, and health are failing. Gonna try to wait till the bonus in January? Gonna try to sneak by and survive like you always have? Maybe.

@2suq+17InjfkA No. The company has demonstrated again and again that it cares about costs more than any knowhow.

Look on the bright side. Oregon just decriminalized he–in and coc–ne. So some nice parting gifts for the TMG folks?

Peng is worse than sohail and believes Moores law is still valid. Intel is screwed. Ltd is worse than ever in a toxic sort of way

Go search TSMC Tainan to see what real manufacturing is. Intel Arizona, Ireland and Israel are a joke in comparison.

PTD / LTD / FSM / TMG days are now assured to be limited.

While they had a technology lead the cost and inefficiencies and diversity noise could be tolerated but now that they lost technology leadership and scale and volume you can be sure Bob and his chief strategy officer and CFO are going to shut down TMG, sad how PSO, BK, Bill, Sohail, Ann, Peng and Kaizad ruined 50 year legacy of leadership

Read my lips -No Layoffs - the company will strategically outsource some parts and this will require re aligning some fab support folks - re training etc. new groups will form to deal with external fab volumes/shipments/numbers etc. So hang tight– looking forward to the new groups/projects/training/ forums report outs etc. and this needs the internal valuable know how of employees.

"That can't be true. Intel's workforce is way more diverse than TSMC." that's what is called a 'False Flag'. Among the things that made me a proud Intel employee through my tenure was the general hiring of and treatment of individuals, and the goal of hiring women engineers and minorities. Though never perfect (what is?), I always felt it helped to become an industry trend setter. .. The upper management planning for long term company viability (or lack thereof) is a totally sperate issue and has NOTHING to do with diversity goals.

Exit interview: How does my response time for the VSP compare to the record holder?

That can't be true. Intel's workforce is way more diverse than TSMC. Also more diverse than AMD and NVIDIA. You mean all those studies said that Diversity makes a company more efficient, creative, and productive ... aren't true? The next thing you'll tell me is that the virtuous cycle of growth was all a bunch of B$ concocted by 1st year associates at MBB. At least we'll always have the Path to 300. Did we ever accomplish that? Well, at least we have the Drive to 25. 25B is market cap right?

This is serious and ALL Intel employees should be nervous and should be developing a contingency plan. January will come fast. Do not underestimate the survival instinct of senior managers and what they will do to save themselves. I remember 2016 and saw many mid and senior level managers abandon their direct employees in order to jump ship and join a different (viable) business unit only to leave their direct reports with no manager and no help during the 2016 situation. Good luck to everyone.

TMG needs to be quarantined so they can infect other groups at Intel with their poor performance.

Don't underestimate what an earthquake this will be for the company. I see Bob releasing this news early as an attempt to make it a 'soft landing' for such a massive change. BK and Murthy own this - full stop.

You all probably start looking for a job very soon. If you get called in for an interview and the interviewer is an Indian don't even bother. They only hire Indians from their own region.

@1gsr+17InjfkA,
TSMC is hiring but they wont touch X-Intel employees with a 10 ft pole. Why hire engineers who were a failure? It will become all clear to them when there is no response to their resumes.

TSMC announced its expansion into AZ back in May... remember? TSMC and INTC have been talking for many years and TSMC's choice to expand in AZ is not a coincidence.

Competition within monopoly walls is not really competition. The hiring process gates the entry and many incumbent actors can make rules and applaud outcomes which are not necessarily linked to market trends or to the mission and values of the company at a minimum. Meanwhile alternatives are being built outside.

To prepare for this Darwinian event, what have Intel leaders done, apart from big acquisitions and managing workplace relations.

it is not that easy. To meet the Intel volume needs TSMC needs to build new fabs, which will take atleast 3-4 years. And TSMC wont be in a hurry to accomodate Intel, with Intel being a potential threat to them.

The worakable process may be Intel spinning TMG as a separate business and selling it to TSMC and letting them manage the production.

This will decimate Oregon. Nike is struggling now too, Portland and surrounding areas could go back in time if this happens.

oh, oh.This is a big one. They already have everything all worked out. Usually news gets the information after its all decided and basically letting employees know to better start looking now. Perfect timing right before all the holiday's. Intel s—s. Sure you made good money and some stocks. The problem is who is going to hire all these engineers. Most of them useless.

"The company says a decision is likely in January." .. Uh, that means a big Yes in January. I guess I can expect the value of my house to go down a few $'s. Sincere good luck to any and all affected by any turbulence to come. No matter what I may feel about Intel management, my fellow employees had everything to do with making my long stint at Intel so rewarding and successful. I thank you.
