Interesting. As a Canadian employee I feel all our managers are US inpats.
Americans in BP are there so that they can have easy access Shale and Gulf in the US, not because they love em Americans. UK North Sea sector is dead. Norwegian don't want BP in their country because of the Safety records. With BP making a U turn on Oil, it will be interesting to see how many yanks (as they are called in the UK) will remain.
EM is a global company. When Americans, on an individual basis, have to compete, they don’t always win. There’s lots of American upper management at BP in the UK and I dont hear them complaining ...
Because they destroyed Oil and Gas in their own countries. So US is a better option. Plus the expat gravy pays for kids' colleges and taxes. So milk it and get-er-done.
EM is a global company and as a thinly disguised management training school (a bad one at that) it's not so surprising that senior managers come from many countries. I don't think the concept is necessarily a bad one. Indeed, in a normal environment, such diversity of cultures and perspectives would be a real plus. Unfortunately the re-programming that senior managers undergo within the EM system, seems to rob them of any credible management skills and it all becomes a race, and josteling for position to see who can be next CEO.
In my time at EM I don't think I saw any evidence of good management....just a lot of very ambitious folks who's own careers were the single focus of everything they did. Still amazes me that it was allowed to work the way it did. Hasn't worked out too well in the end though!

Canadian XOM managers would literally light their own employees on fire to climb that ladder. That lack of morals will take you far in this corporation. I'm looking at you Newfoundland/Guyana.
