Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Change in name only

Remember when everyone was glad that the company was listening to us and getting rid of forced ranking? HR built up hype and we were all eager to see how the new process would improve morale at the company.

Then the day comes, and we see that it was really a change in name only. Five buckets, eerily similar to quintiles, just with happy names like "Good" instead of "mediocre." Hidden within this new system was a removal of the maximum drop in ranking someone could incur year over year, which was weaponized to layoff under the guise of performance issues.

"Be careful of what you wish for," they say. I'm pretty sure the only thing that was revitalized here were the sadists in HR.

It was a workforce reduction exercise pure and simple. 8-10% abruptly kicked to the curb without a severance. Terrible.

@1fte+17ClgWRc Positive change yes until like you said made it a weapon to get rid of 5-7% of us. I’m assuming the 8-10% piped a few made it through.

I will forever be direct with my supervisor from now on and ask bluntly what my status is every few months and have a pulse on outside jobs. I saw several amazing people PIL and one try and leave halfway.

I understand you need a system to weed out those that are underperforming but this is not it. Also when will managers realize not everyone wants to be that. Some are happy being technical and others just as supervisors.

I love my job and the people I work with. Being dropped to NI and now worrying all the time isn’t healthy.

It starts with honest conversations and pushback on management that their employees are doing the jobs it takes and we’ll. Unless a reason exists let’s not pull rabbits out of hats and make things up.

I think it had the potential to be a positive change. No cap on RGP could have helped people stuck at the bottom due to bad supervisor or poor job fit to be able to move up within 1-2 rank cycles. Also had the potential to get out of quints and create a wider middle in the distribution.

However the way it was applied in this first year as a PIPoff mechanism basically ruined any possibility of people feeling good/safe about the assessment process in the future.

Lipstick on a pig. Same process with new wording and without the safety net that prevented you from being thrown under the bus.

This is not how I remember it. I remember specific people raising the issue identified just to be p–pooed by the usual cheerleaders
