Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Was anybody told to reapply?

A question for those who were laid off last week: has anybody been told they could reapply after some time has passed? A friend who was affected said his manager might have hinted at something like that to him, but I think that’s just wishful thinking on his part.

You can always reapply, that is the dumbest question I ever heard

There was no ban on rehire that occurs during other circumstances (with Sev pkg) I received. If it's within 12mo for me they want a partial payback! I don't want to work at Dell anymore.. I welcome change but caught my coat in the revolving door too many times and the idiocy of the "integration".Let's help each other through Linkedin and other resources if you can!!

Some teams at Dell are so lean that when hiring is allowed (like if a backfill is allowed) most do look for previous Dell experience and will hire if you fit the bill. Training someone is tuff in general so if you can get someone who already understands “Dell” they tend to hit the ground running.

Why would you want to go back?

The information they provide you tells you that you can apply for other open positions right away. Some people do end up moving in other roles or coming back to the company at another point time.

You are thinking about this all wrong and again, this is nothing personal.

YOU are not being made redundant, your ROLE is. Think about it.

So, if your ROLE is made redundant due to cost cutting and they at the time cannot find a suitable alternative ROLE for you, you take a WFR.

However, over the coming year(s) ROLES will come up and you can apply for them. Given you are ex Dell (and have hopefully kept a clean slate and good reputation) you can go for these ROLES.

See my point? this is not about you, it's about the headcount. If there are 10 people in a dept and they can only afford 8, they drop 2 roles. You could be the ace of diamonds and have a great reputation and clean slate so when the business recovers you can go for it.

I was WFR'd in 2012 and rehired back in 2 months, delayed joining date by another month and had to pay back prorated severance and still collected unemployment. I know a couple of other folks who did the same. My WFR was not related to performance and the new team did their due diligence speaking with team members from my previous job before re-hiring.
If you are rehired within 12 months of WFR, you get to keep your seniority and no pay raises while joining back. Also, need to pay back pro rated severance

Why would they want you back? They don't just let poor performers go. I've known some amazing people who were left go but timing etc worked for the company. Some products under perform on occasion so they cut whole teams regardless of skills. Have seen lots of great people given their jotters only to see them around the offices again 18 months later.

if they laid you off why would they want you back? if they wanted to keep you they would have moved you...

Usually there is a 12-18 month cooling off period for anyone let go. They generally don't hire people back within that time frame. I know a few people who were let go who are back in similar roles but all of them had 12-18 month cooling off period.

wishful thinking. think of it akin to 'keep in touch.'

Most boomerang stories are of those who are working for other companies then get rehired back
