XOM employees are wired and bred to be corporate zombies, why would anyone befriend that?

Worked for XOM for close to 15 years. I met some nice people during that time that are still friends. A lot of not so nice people who were very focused on getting ahead and were willing to screw anyone else to get there. You see that anywhere, but for sure XOM has a higher proportion of such individuals. The system and ranking is designed to facilitate that. One thing I saw multiple times was seemingly nice people turning into monsters once they got on the management ladder! It was an extraordinary transformation...as if they had been taken into a room and reprogrammed...Very strange!
There are many kind, wonderful people at work in XOM. Perhaps some posting here are not really in EM; and a few might be quite antisocial themselves, and have not been able to connect to others...
I disagree that everyone won't do that because of bad optics. But just saying, I if I knew you, I would write a scathing review of you for being a prick.
Eff this. No one will talk to you or even write you a recommend on LinkedIn once you get laid off because it’s bad optics. Don’t kid yourselves.

She'd majored in Public Relations.

A lot of good, quality people work at ExxonMobil. I have made dear, life-long friends I would stay in touch with if I left the Company tomorrow. Some have retired already and we continue to stay in touch.

I've accumulated many friends in the company - after work gathering, safaris to africa, fabulous business visits to Norway (Viggeland) and Singapore! That one time in Amsterdam (after Rotterdam).
Really get to know each other!
I've gotten to know their feelings, knowledge, understanding of things. You know?
And now I can use that for my own good.

My best friend and former roommate works at XOM. Had another best friend from university working at XOM, but was PIP’d.
I have made some amazing friends at XOM that I spend time with outside of work. Having “my people” here is what makes it all bearable. Some of us have managed to escape and some are still here in the process of looking for new opportunities. Having a great support system makes this experience less miserable.
In social circles outside work, many ExxonMobil employees inevitably talk about their frequent flyer status, hotel miles, their money and how they wish they had more. Many are one dimensional and so boring.
There are very few EM folks i would hang out with outside the workplace. Most are book smart but have no social skills. Some are oddball weirdos. And others are so engulfed in EM that it defines who they are, what they are about, and has taken over their entire lives.
I have people to commiserate and pass the time, but after a decade I cannot really trust or count on them.
There are no friends at that workplace. Some can be tolerated more than others, but people that ExxonMobil hires are constitutionally incapable of forming human attachments.
Yeah. His name is DW. But most call him Darren.
One that I like better than most? Yes. Someone that I want to hang out with away from work? No.
