Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell IT @Roundrock -Shameful

I understand companies have to tighten belt at bad times. I cannot blame Dell for that. But Jeff Clarke, you told folks will be treated with dignity. However what happened is anything but dignified. You fired a bunch US citizens while 80 percent or more of your IT workforce in Round Rock is on some kind of visa. Can you call this a dignified action? I let you be the judge.

Dell is a Bank, plain and simple explained by a former manager to me. It’s all about the $$.

Why do you think employers get the sh–tiest low end laptops that Dell makes?

You seem to confuse "immigrants" with "low wage H1-B visa workers". They are NOT NOT NOT "immigrants". They are simply low skilled, low wage workers who work for cheaper than their US counterparts. Why do you think so many US tech workers are the ones to go first? Has nothing to with anything other than $$$$/PROFIT. PERIOD! Immigrants are those who come, apply for citizenship, get work VISAs and wait their turn to be US citizens. The H1-B workers we have here have only one goal. Make as much money as they can so in the end, they can go home and live like kings. Trust me, they have told me this first hand.

H1b is used when they can't find America workers to do the job. Seems like they can find them now. The system is broken.

You are right. Most would not have taken the job, if the salary was that of H1b. Now, I do not know how less an H1b gets paid. But based on your assertion, I assume it is something less than prevailing wage. Definition of prevailing wage is: a willing applicant and a willing employer can agree on without any undue influence(example H1b).

You are proving my point. You are verifying that Dell kept H1b s because they are cheaper. Dell has also certified to labor Department that they are paying prevailing wage to every H1b. So someone is lying. Let us have a class action lawsuit against Dell. We can prove that Dell discriminated against older folks while keeping underpaid visa holders. Time to act.

Now its unfair but would you have taken the job if your salary is the same as an h1b holder’s salary? I highly doubt it.

There was one layoff on H1b visa that I know in RR, with a kid in high school and another started college. He has 60 days to find a new job or he needs to leave the country.

You could've been like the guy in Hopkinton who was laid off many years ago. As they were walking him the doors of the building the landscapers were putting in new anuals in the beds around the entrance. He let them know that it was not cool to plant flowers on the days they were laying people off.

No one is saying Americans hate immigrants. We really don’t. I have only good things to say about every immigrant I worked with at Dell. Someone said, we code together. I agree.

With that said, what happened at IT was clearly not proportional. We have children and family to feed too. At the very least the pain could have been shared more equitably.

I am not faulting the immigrants. I fault the management and Dell. They talk eloquently about social justice practices. But when it comes down to do something about it, they go the opposite way and screw Americans .

I had a conversation with a senior director in the past (over a year ago) about how they decided who may get impacted. While there is no straightforward answer, the director gave me a few factors to consider:

  1. Whether the job/employee is easily replaceable
  2. What’s the impact on a particular project
  3. Individual performance
  4. It’s Corporate America, sometimes it just happens

I asked a naive question: if my pay rate is at the upper range of the pay scale, would I be chosen over another coworker on the same level with lower pay. The director emphasized that where your pay rate on the pay scale shouldn’t play a role. Not sure if it is truth, but the four factors above do make some sense to me.

Better to lay off you becuase you can find job anywhere, people on visas can not. And its not 80%. There is less than 5% people on visas

That’s exactly what happened! My coworkers on visas were not impacted and It is expected to be taken like normal? Politics s—s and priorities should be for performance not your last name or because it’s easier for you to get a job as a citizen

In reality, Immigrants have lower pay and do more job. This is a US problem not Dell problem.

Good riddance to people that hate on immigrants, or any group of people, really. Layoffs are hard. A huge mix of people is affected. Immigrants typically get paid close to the lower limit of their prevailing wage determination (the minimum they must be paid to hold their visa, by law); it's no surprise that they're not targetted en masse when belt-tightening restructuring takes place, it's simple math.

Dell is a place for everyone. We code as one. Immigrants, we get the job done.
