Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Race to the Bottom

There is an active push to move as much work as possible to low cost countries from high cost countries. The people making these decisions are managers in high cost countries. Workers in higher cost locations like Houston are expected to just smile and go along with it. Challenging that direction could potentially hurt your ranking. There are very capable individuals in these low-cost locations, but it's sad we are sending so many jobs overseas. Eventually the managers who are making the decisions will get outsourced themselves. We have lost all sense of balance.

I am one of those PIP'd and now unemployed. My supervisor who ranked me is in AP. All of us who were forced out are from NA region. Moral lesson: If your current team has a corresponding AP and you're in NA, better move to another team without AP or look for other ops outside EM. Wait, I forgot about SA and EU BSC's, consider those as well. Most of the orgs at EM has mirror sites outside of NA.

@1tek+16wxBglK I added the comment under 1rju. By no means am I defending the move, I’m saying that they’re trying to cut costs by convincing a few schmucks their new agile assignments are promotions when all they are doing is take on responsibilities previously held by managers and supervisors without giving them a pay bump.

It has also allowed some of the more incompetent teams in EMIT to send work to the bottom of their “backlog” and added more red tape to getting anything done. The ones getting nicer promotions are the ones kissing a– saying that this is curing cancer whilst those of us speaking up against it are being shown the door.

@1rju+16wxBglK Oh man that is truly the biggest load of horse sh– I’ve seen posted here. Since we outsourced everything they touched is screwed up. Banks did the same thing and 60% of the time you can’t even get online and access accounts anymore. This is bs and it has nothing to do with talent. There are other motives.

@rwy+16wxBglK But they are doing something about it while adding additional overhead. That’s why EMIT went agile. They’ve pretty much turned higher paying management jobs into jobs for some of the competent people, only they don’t get the one salary bumps. What we do get is the talented people unable to educate the newer or lower performing ones because it isn’t part of the role, so we took someone who knows how things work to manage teams that have no clue what they’re doing. Sounds like an interim fix while IT gets outsourced to the BTC until the folks over there jump over to Infosys or Microsoft.

PR censoring lay-off boards. They will say your just disgruntled employees until you expose truth about something major. Those posts go fast.

Really?
I noticed several posts criticizing CSR (Clinton, NJ) employee and low to higher level management that expose or seem to discuss sense of fraud like behaviors

are being removed from this discussion board if they include CSR VP mention?

I see them posted sometimes and a few days later they vanish. Am I just confused and they were imaginary posts ? Or...if this is a reality who and why someone would do it?

To go on a tangent about Asia - what are countries known for:
Japan - good quality stuff but not most creative
China - we make you buy cheap
India - we talk you pay (call centers, BS IT outsourcing, etc)

Any of you bought any high quality items recently made in India???

There are no under utilized low cost locations anymore. Companies may choose to have 2 US employees, or 10 in India with an expat manager to boot. Who is kidding whom? Which cost savings? Invariably, the poor results will reflect on the bottom line, by which point all the outsourcing top management will be long gone with rich payout.

H1b brings this "we talk you pay" model home to you, so that your disemployment can occur right here.

Why does taking an expat assignment = greed. The premium isn’t 40%, it is 35% and it is in recognition that your lifestyle will be very different to the US etc. These people are busting a gut to make the site the best it can be, why the hate?

For those doing the calculators, it is still massively positive and as the amount of expats subside, it will become more so.

I don’t really understand the negativity here, I am also from a higher cost location and this is the new reality, get used to it.

By the way, I do not work for BTC.

Nobody disputes the fact that top Indian universities produce great talents better than Texas A&M. But as pointed out by several posts down here, those graduates will come to US for graduate school and end up in Google/Facebook/Amazon. You need to be really high to believe we are getting those talents in BTC. And also, the expat pay and benefits for those greedy a-holes and business class commutes destroy any potential of cost savings

Looking at the comments, below it seems like a war is raging against India. Keep it up but let me clarify a few things for you imbeciles from various superior countries (including clearcut a–holes from Belgium, Brazil, France, Country of Texas. A&M etc.) :

1). The only top students (referred here and there) from India are undergraduate students from the original 5 IITs. The employees hired at BTC and other help desks are second or third class students at the best. The top students from India are still coming to the US with direct job offers or to pursue graduate studies in top universities.

2). If you look around, many US based employees who s— at work and have a– kissed their way to the middle level management are from third grade universities in India such as Pune University, ICT (who knows what it stands for), Anna University, Manipal Institute of Technology etc. So stop pointing fingers at BTC employees in India.

3). Talking about cost savings through BTC, many non Indian and some Indian greedy a–holes jumped on India expat wagon just for the uptick in their income. They are getting paid US salary and 40% more plus other expat benefits. Them and many other US based employees are flying business class back and forth for trivial things such as 1 employee meet and greet. You can do your cost saving calculation.

@1dn the top Indian Engineering and Technology programs are indeed extremely selective and produce (what I know first hand) some seriously top notch graduates. Unfortunately I don’t think we are attracting that level of talent in India.

Ummm actually many of these jobs they’re outsourcing are site positions. They bring them here to train, and send them back and I don’t care how great you are but many process engineering and site roles cannot be performed responsibly and effectively from the other side of the globe. That’s just common sense from anyone who’s actually worked the field. This strategy is short sighted and harmful in the long term for the competency and effectiveness of this organization. India and Malaysia should support Asia operations. The sites and regional offices should be support local. Field operators aren’t going to listen or take sh– from clueless 20 year olds on the other side of the earth smh. id–ts. Clearly these comments are from people with limited hands on site experience just like most management.

I don’t know too much about the education system in India. But I have heard that their top engineering schools are more selective than MIT and Caltech.

Salaries should be PPP adjusted; India / US is 1 / 5 on a PPP basis, so comps should reflect that. Its not less, its not more. Its fair. Additionally, comps should follow quality of talent. Talent in many parts of the world are very strong, but its also unfair to compare a graduate of MIT and Princeton with some of the regional schools that are no way close to the top US schools. Clearly schools aren't the only factor for success, but they do have a small influence (atleast in the early years).

@ @tib+16wxBglK - No I am not from India. I would agree that the help desk can be variable but it was when it was in KL and Moncton.. it was when it was local... the HD is an entry level position so you get a range of competencies.

You are sort of missing the point... BTC and other functions are hiring PHDs, the best of talent... we have outsourced the Helpdesk, it’s not even in house.

I don’t agree with how aggressive they are being with NSI or the fact that they changed the % last min but... reality is the process behind losing the bottom 10% is a function of the system... we just neverfollowed through with it. I know people in NSI and I feel bad.. many are not terrible performers but they are not as good as the others they are assessed against.

The problem is not with the employees at the working level. The problem is the number of managers, and the number of layers of management. These are all pure overheads.

To reduce costs, these overheads need to be cut. It does not seem like that is happening. And it's not surprising, since they are making these decisions.

These are the people that drove the company into the ditch to begin with. Why should they be trusted with the rescue?

What is the issue with balance? We are a global company. They have a talent pool in India which can’t be matched elsewhere and they pay attractive salaries... Bengaluru get good people.

The 1/5 isn’t accurate thought. It is actually about 1/10 for graduates and narrows a little to 1/5 - 1/4 as you get to CL27+...

Damn right managers jobs should get offshored too... this is just the reality of globalisation... plenty of opportunities will remain for people in higher cost locations but you prob need to consider skills you have which isn’t easy to offshore.

Those managers touting “1/5 cost in BTC” are just delusional. Like everything that EM does, we are 5-10 years too late to the party. The past 5-10 years are the peak of globalization. Every year the US issues like 50,000 H1B visas to import talents. Meanwhile the high tech industry in Asia has been booming, not dying like fossil fuel. You really think there’s still an army of highly talented engineers eager to take your 1/5 salary? Think twice. The way I see it, the BTC are getting two types of people. One is totally incapable folks who cannot even find a job at Infosys, like the ones you work with when submitting an IT issue nowadays. The other one is waiting to get another job in an IT company in 3 months.
