Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Critical Skills

Ford rolled out a Sabbatical during the initial stages of Covid 19. This plan was available to most employees. Your manager would to approve it in order to participate.

I know employees who inquired straight away as it was rolled out and denied because they were considered "critical skills" and since there were not enough of these resources denied.

What positions at Ford are considered non - critical and why do we have them? HR makes a business case for positions which involve salaries and benifits that help make the company successful.

Why are "non - critical" employees more likely to be granted these sabbaticals.

I figured taking a sabbatical was declaring "I'm not crucial!" and putting yourself too if list if cuts come.

@2gfg+16wRKPbZ Exactly the same thing when I worked in Mainframe support at FMCC. So many who retired died within two years. It was sad.

Three guys in our group said they applied for the sabbatical and were denied.
Whether they are telling the truth, I do not know.
They haven’t done any real work in years. They are very skilled at the self promotion game so maybe they have some greater cool convinced that they are critical workers?

The sad thing is that nearly every long timer who has retired from Ford in our area was dead within 2 years. One guy died in the bathroom at work right after his retirement lunch. That was horrible. The one person who hasn’t died within 2 years is in very poor health.

People I would urge you to retire as soon as possible and forget about Ford.

We had two people in my group take advantage of this offer, 3 months each. Both were close to retirement age. My guess is that they just wanted to stay away from anything (possible Covid) that could shorten their retirements!

I know of engineers in management positions in Powertrain who took a sabbatical. I also know of a buyer who took one.

My understanding from colleagues was that it was defined by how long an employee could not do their job without interrupting business. For instance, if you stop working for a few days and it pauses a bunch of processes and flows, you'd probably be considered a critical worker. But if you can go for a month without people and work stopping, you're probably not critical. Its all related to continuing business without interruption.
