I am a soon-to-be Development Engineer in Exxon's downstream division, any tips?

You won’t do a lot of real engineering work so hope you have excellent PowerPoint skills
We hire engineers of all desciplines, but contract out all or most of the engineering design work. You will end up spending years crunching numbers and preparing waterfall charts (they love these) as part of the annual P&B (Planning & Budgeting) cycle or Stewardship. Good Luck.

I always chuckle with newhires- what are you doing joining an oil company in 2020? Most are from earnest big state schools in the South and Midwest. So they don't realize they are joining a shrinking company in a moribund industry - and that was before covid hit. There is no growth in oil and gas, all you have to look forward to is cut after cut after cut. We deserve the people that would come to work for us.
Live below your means. Max out 401k and roth IRAs, do not buy a new car and dont try to compete with your friends in blowing money

If you are incompetent enough to not have career prospect in any other industry and company, you are welcome to join EM. You will fit right in and become a supervisor and manager and VP soon.

Oil industry is not a growth industry and will be struggling for years. Not a great company to start a career in.
During these trying times Exxon has to get rid of the dead wood. (Dead wood due only to project shut down as Exxon does employ the best). They still need new blood as there is a future there.
Don’t let this cloud your vision as you start your career. It’s a great company, we just have to understand the challenges it faces right now
