For anyone saying outsourcing may not be the answer and does not work is blind to how the world works. Talent is global and there are plenty of smart, hardworking people all over the world - not just in Houston. There are plenty of very competent EM employees in India, Thailand, Czech, and Argentina. We are a global company and we do hire talented folks all over the world.

Aren’t you being presumptuous (and a tad bit racist)? Just because there is a wage differential does not mean resources overseas are inferior.
I know it s—s for us when jobs get outsourced to other countries. It’s a business decision that does not work in our favor.

You get what you pay for. We all know outsourcing is not the answer especially to India. This too will bite XOM in the a–.

The reality is that for every barrel we produce or refine, we carry much higher fixed cost than our global competition. When demand is down and prices are low, we do not cover that fixed cost and go in the red. I hate losing my match and maybe my job but that’s the reality. You could make the argument to cut the dividend instead but I would do that to increase capex not keep this overhead we have today. If you doubt that, hit a few buttons on careerconnect to see the size of our org chart

XOM's outsourcing has been pretty much a disaster. EMIT outsourced to Argentina, Brazil, Budapest and Prague for cost savings, and these people were in Houston pretty much every week for meetings. Plus they kept sending US managers with the 40% expat uplift - a sought after perk. Very high attrition as it was worth more to have worked for ExxonMobil than to currently work for them. Over time, the EU location cost reached parity so the advantage vanished. Regarding Asia, uncoordinated there too: some Bengaloru, some Kuala Lumpur, some Shanghai ... depending on where the study authors, who became the first managers, would like to visit I guess ...

Why are we questioning Bengluru Center? It was a cost cutting strategy which is very rational.

What may not be as rational is a bunch of people trampling over each other to jump on the expat bus for perks and extra money which kind of negates the cost saving effort by the company.

Good idea – poor execution?

Argentina would be nice! Churrascos, beach, wine parties, etc.

That is the wrong word.

It has been Bengaluru for a number of years now.

Instead of making comments on Bangalore (who are also EM employees), if you don’t want your job to be outsourced, develop a skill or competency that cannot be outsourced. Invest in yourself, keep learning. Best way to avoid this stress is to focus on what we control ourselves and make ourselves stronger in capabilities.

Do you think there we will get to a a point in the not so distant future where most office employees are based in Asia?
