Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Flatten the Org

ExxonMobil has so many Divisions with so many managers: UOG, UIS, and hundreds more. All the managers do is meet with other divisions and chit chat all day long. These divisions should be merged altogether and flatten the org. Only the doers of real jobs should stay.

I am one of those where rubber meets the road guy, who was terminated. Partly my fault because I did not let the management know what I was actually doing and what value-add I have. Now that I am gone, let's see how they do without me. I know they will figure evrything out, but not without pain. Good luck.

Most of them cannot even properly rank their own people. They spend 90% of their time in meetings. How can you possibly have thorough knowledge of what your team does?

Agree. Managers sit in meetings all day without making any contributions. No idea what they do all day. We can't afford this. Need leaders and doers, less cheerleaders. Look at where too much management has got us. We need technical staff to have a stronger voice and be heard by senior leaders without being scrubbed.

There are many "do-ers" that have no work for the next couple of years. Why do we need so many people working projects if we know full well capital funds are not there. Get rid of the low performers across the org and move the high performing projects personnel into those positions.

except they PIP'd the doers already.
That's the best comedy really. imagine this scenario: "i'm a manager. I have no idea what it is you do. You make me feel inadequate, I'll PIP you." Then 3-6 months later nothing is working and the manager is REALLY seen to be inadequate. Happy PIP!

Genius!!

There are a little over 3000 executives in the company. There will be fewer executives in the future

It might just look at the earnings call. https://www.fool.com/earnings/call-transcripts/2020/07/31/exxonmobil-xom-q2-2020-earnings-call-transcript.aspx

Neil Chapman – Senior Vice President

Yeah. Yeah, Stephen is right, Doug. And I would tell you that this evaluation that we're going through as part of this year's plan to set up our cost structure for future years, '21 and beyond, we are looking at very significant efficiencies and lower operating expenses. And I know you're going to ask me, OK, what is the number? That is part of our planned process.

So we'll share with you at the end of the – you know what I'm going to say, Doug. But as I said in my comments, we do see the potential for further workforce reductions, including overhead and management positions, but we'll look at that reductions by function, by business, by country, and that will be the basis. We will conclude those plans during the summer months, and we'll review that with the board in November.

This makes do much sense that sadly there is no way it will happen in XOM
