Hey everyone, so I'm in a bit of a predicament. I wanted to know if there was anyway to leave ExxonMobil diplomatically(willingly), without that being considered as reneging on my offer. I ask this because I currently have a job offer from another company that's doing very well during Covid-19 and seems stable. I'm supposed to start full time with Exxon in mid August 2020 but given what I've been hearing and seeing the company do, I'm a bit nervous that I might get laid off from ExxonMobil in a few moths due job cuts and a highly potential second round of layoffs.
In this case, I would accept my new job offer now from the other company and ask ExxonMobil if I could leave willingly prior to them making job cuts(if my job is eliminated in the second round of likely layoffs that's happening around December 2020). I know that generally reneging on an offer is very bad and has severe consequences such as being black listed from the company and other penalties.
If I were to accept my new offer for the other company but still start full-time at ExxonMobil, would there be any way for me to leave the company diplomatically before layoffs happen(take an offer to willingly leave instead of being fired or PIP'd. ?)
Since I am a new hire and will start in Mid August at ExxonMobil, I know that I don't qualify for a severance package if I am laid off in December because I would have only been at the company for a couple of months and not a year which is the requirement for the 3 Month severance package. Is there anything that I can do to diplomatically renege my offer given that the situation at ExxonMobil does not seem to be improving and there is a high likelihood that layoffs will happen in a couple of months?
I'm considering this because if I am laid off in December, I will be stuck with a year lease in a place I don't want to be in. Would the company even help pay for my lease? Let's just say I do decide to stay with ExxonMobil, decline my other offer and I get laid off from ExxonMobil. Would the company pay the penalties to get me out of my lease?
Another option would be to not even start at Exxon and voluntarily give up my spot. Would Exxon not let me reapply in the future if I were to do that?
