Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

Another round of Layoffs recently

I'm amazed this company has not folded, even with government oversight. TT and team took a solid Fortune 500 company and pile drove it into oblivion. Not that the executives have anything to worry about with their golden parachutes. The only other people making out in this scenario are headhunters and other tech companies. There is some excellent talent on the market and big corps are scooping them up.

After a many, many year there I made some lifelong friends who are letting me know another round of layoffs is going on now. Its cutting deep into some of the last of their viable talent. I wonder how a company who's future is reliant on innovation is going to innovate with 3rd party companies? The people are who made this collective of different companies work.

The engine has shut down. The people who were paddling have been let go. The harbor master won't even let you in the steering room. Pirates even know better than to come close since there is no longer value. TT, hows that boat analogy working for you now?

"Starlink?! We have a lineup of that equipment in our CO."

Different Starlink. The one other posters are talking about is a system of 1000s of satellites that Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX) is launching to provide internet. These satellites would be much lower than the current satellites used for internet, so there'd be shorter delay times (latency).

There are pros and cons to this that other people are talking about.

Personally, I think fiber will always win vs. satellites for internet where someone has installed it. (Satellites for video may always be good for video - I don't know). It's cheaper to install a faster card at a fiber-served house to upgrade speeds than it is to launch thousands of new satellites with faster.

I'm not sure Musk can pull this off financially. He's a multi-billion debtor. On the other hand, there are others rushing to do the same thing, including Jeff Bezos, with their own constellations of 1000s of satellites.

Me, I think this is going to end in tears "for all mankind":

Starlink?! We have a lineup of that equipment in our CO. They put in these little rack UPS units because the site UPS was hosed and they didnt want to repair. So now we have these small rack UPS(s) all over and the batteries have NEVER been replaced, they are leaking all over the place and our manager tells us its not out problem and let engineering due their job. Well, everytime we lose power and go to generator that Starlink bay goes completely dark, and we are told not to touch it until a ticket comes down. That usually takes 4-6 business days. But without a job in ETA I am not allowed to go to the bathroom lol

TT said he is going to provide the fiber to hook up each satellite.

For starlink to do what he is claiming he would literally have to figure out how to transmit signals faster than the speed of light.

Elon Musk has failed on a LOT of things. The only reason SpaceX and Tesla aren't failures are the 10's of billions in government subsidies they have received.

I think you forget that windstream overs "best effort internet " so what would be the difference? At least with starlink its honest. WS just lies straight up lies. Not getting my real time usage on 3Mb DSL.

Would definitely give Starlink a try. Living in a rural neighborhood, the only offerings are Kenetic and satellite. The neighborhood calls it Pathetic, not Kenetic. Currently paying for 100mps, and getting 3mps! After numerous service calls, it’s time to call it quits!

The repairmen wear masks. Maybe not for the Covid, maybe because I’m being robbed!

I can see both sides. But, I will say that I have yet to see Elon do anything half A$ed. Something this place is famous for. Logically, there has to be sufficient opportunity for the investment being made. If not, maybe call Elon and tell him you know more than his experts.

Sounds like death to wireline phones and long distance for sure.

starlink... Come on folks... That's going to be a terribley latent network regardless if it low earth orbit. Not trying to defend Windstream here but starlink will never be anything more than a best effort carrier much like the other satellite carriers. It's just science folks. Radio waves only travel so fast in air, and only so fast through the ionosphere. It will work fine for you as long as you don't need real-time applications... The same real-time applications you rely on to work from home hmmm...

The layoffs that have occurred are just a drop in the bucket on what to expect:

Elon Musk getting ready to offer his Starlink internet service. 5 Million Americans have already signed up.

Question is...How many are existing Windstream customers who are tired of their poor service?

Wouldn’t surprise me if TT himself was on the list.

I think it's interesting that we haven't discussed the last round of layoffs yet. I'm getting a new manager. I've been introduced to the new manager. But I don't report to him just yet. A colleague in another department is in a similar situation.

Sounds like a large re-org is happening. So maybe round 2 is on deck.

My favorite boat analogy stolen from another post:

The executives at WINMQ represent the orchestra on the deck of the Titanic. The music keeps playing as everyone scrambles to find life boats. Some people jump to their death into the icy Atlantic other find a life boat and are rescued. In the mean time no one looks to find out where the gouge in the side of the ship came from or how to seal it off.
