Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

To bad the 301 will not unite and walk on a Saturday

About 300 people joined a "walk for jobs" to protest against redundancy plans at an aircraft engine maintenance plant on Saturday.
General Electric (GE) announced in July that it plans to cut 369 jobs at its site in Nantgarw, near Caerphilly.
A further 180 posts have already been lost since the coronavirus crisis began through voluntary redundancies.
The Welsh Government said it was "doing all that we can to support workers".
Protest organiser Caerphilly Trades Council urged those taking part to social distance and wear masks, as they gathered near Caerphilly Castle for the midday event.

To many 301 members would rather work us out of a job on a Saturday. Every Saturday worked is one less day until the next round of layoffs. Yes covid had a small impact on this crisis but the real reason is mis management from the powers to be. So I wait day by day to get my unprofessional layoff papers Again. Where was the membership leaders from the hall the last 2 rounds of layoffs. In their office or home sleeping in bed. They were not on the floor or in the conference room where they rounded up the cattle and showed us the door.

You mean I can't keep my job getting paid $40 an hour and spending 8 hours a day making one $5 widget a day?? The Union says I'm skilled and worth every dollar. I can even take my time so I can come in this Saturday and get paid $60 an hour to do what I should have done yesterday. You know, Union Protection, I'm senior, D-Rates rule, and all that stuff! You make it sound like "Common Sense" should be common!

Why all these dumb a– posts about the union? Whatever the problem with the union they are "below the fold" in newspaper where the headlines for POWER are orders are off 42% YoY. Do expect the union to bargain to save the union jobs when there is reduced demand?

What will be worse is the outcome on the other end if this happens and I'm sure it will. If any of them get called back I predict that 80% or more will turn it down. So they will have to fill that void with new hires. Nobody with any skill value will bother risking the highly probable chance that the diabolical that is GE will repeat again. People want a career, not a short term gig. We will experience the lowest skilled new hires we have ever accepted that will be there for nothing more than to just get paid. They won't even be interested in learning a skill and being good at it. All it will add to is the current decline. Nothing good will come from this now or ever. I can't believe GE has gotten as bad as it has. It is at an unimaginable level.

Wait for the U.S. Department of Labor to get done with their audit. Everyone will see how much damage RM, SF, and a few others did. We have one man in that hall who’s honest and believes in what the Union stands for, MS. The truth WILL come out, wait for it. Better days are coming. It takes time to sort through the mess and get rid of the trash. I’m guessing there must be a reason MS and JC refused to sign off on the Consolidation Agreement while RM and SF were all for it. It’s not working and destroying us, my trust is with MS for trying to do the right thing then and standing his ground. He’s now the only one I trust at that hall.

For some of us, GE isn't everything that we have going for us. Some of us have our own golden parachutes ready to deploy and vacations we want to plan. It would be easier to schedule if I knew when the layoffs would happen. It's better for me to be perceived as having nothing when I'm made to leave. I'll be sure to act beat down and maybe I'll even be able to squirt a tear or two if the time actually does comes. If the truth we're known, I wouldn't even receive the fake sympathy or a sandwich on my way out the door. Don't you worry, I'll be laughing and smiling on my way home because I know what I won't be returning to the next work day. My breakfast sure will taste great that morning!

Actually these post are half right/wrong. The contract calls for union paid union business (UBUP) and company paid union business (UBCP). Some items like pursuing grievances, labor-management meetings, etc. are UBCP per the CBA. In case of an officer attending a IUE Board Meeting (one 301 person is on the Board), the local would pay and then get reimbursed either by actual amount or stipend,

Everytime I hear in the news how working people need to unionize, and how the evil corporations are working to destroy unions, I feel bad for the unions. Everytime I have to deal with a union employee in real life, in 30 seconds I feel like cursing them out. I had a union guy charge 8 hours to put a flare fitting nut on a quarter inch tube end. 1 tube - 1 day.

The only reason we work on a Saturday is be because we spend Monday-Friday sandbagging any production. So we have to work Saturday is we're going to make schedule. The only way there will be a united walk is if there is a Hoveround supplied for each and every member who attends. Have you seen these slugs? I'm surprised most don't walk around with supplied oxygen. Not because they are in poor health. Several are in pathetic health but because they are too lazy to use their own lungs to breathe in normal air. You expect these people to walk on a Saturday without overtime pay?? Don't fool you self into believing GE isn't taking notice!! Everybody is trying to get theirs before it's all over.

I work at a non-union GE facility, of which are many, and I envy the union "problems" you complain about. We are paid considerably less, less benefits, higher out of pocket expenses, no locked in raises or lump sum payments over four year periods, and very little recourse for disciplinary action against us. During this layoff, seniority is of very little value here. At least you have a structured procedure based on seniority and job classification. In fact, seniority can be a bit of a liability in our non-union facility. Why not get rid of an older, less productive worker? Not to mention the more vacations and health liabilities the more senior employees have. ? Just remember, everyone gets old if they live long enough. Everyone. Performance and merit can be included in a union shop. Here, where I work, performance is not actually paid a premium. We rely on "local market wage" to determine our pay. So go on and complain.

The reason no one cares about unions anymore is because they've just become a methodical way for old people to use seniority to protect jobs over actual performance and merit.

The 301 hall was to busy counting the stipend they receive from national to be worried about you having a job. Just look at the Union “leadership”, the hall is filled with a bunch of mini mes, nepotism at its finest. Nothing with the 301 is going to change with the current hall occupants.
