Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

If you know if unethical behavior go to the press

Shine a light on the bad behavior. Go to the press. Choose a paper/news outlet that management cares about and that is widely read. Don’t be complicit.

@3dly do you understand what unethical means?

Also, can you proof read what you are trying to communicate before commenting? That was pure c-ap right there. I think you were PIP'd due to lack of basic education.

To the person who answered about "it is unethical but it is legal and this USA", I think you did not get it, but I glad that you know where you you are and We know what kind of cr*p you are. The one that try to win in any means necessary even to sell your family to win. "The rules that the companies use" really!

For the person who commented
“It is ethical and legal to layoff for any cause, if you are an "at will" employee. When you were hired you were hired under "at will" terms (no contract). If you want contract protection, join a union.”

It is legal this is true. Attempting to hide a lay-off from your investors and throwing employees under the bus is at the least unethical.

It is ethical and legal to layoff for any cause, if you are an "at will" employee. When you were hired you were hired under "at will" terms (no contract). If you want contract protection, join a union. There was never any guarantee for "at will" jobs - conversely, employees never guaranteed they would perform (find oil) . Both employee and employer took risk. Now get back to work or you are next

I’ve been top performer for 9 years. And I was proud of what I delivered - plenty of patents and business solutions. This year I’ve been dropped to one band above NSI, in spite of very good feedback and performance. I feel sorry for my friends who were let go: young and very experienced. Next year I expect to be out, because it apparently doesn’t matter what I bring to the company. There is little care for good technical people. Company is being reshuffled to managers and manager s— ups. Not a good long term strategy.

It's unethical, but it's legal. This is USA, the company is using the rules that are allowed per local/federal governments.

To the person that NSI forced resignation is not a layoff. Maybe I misunderstood about what you are trying to say, or maybe you are the person who lives in the world of " It's unethical but is legal"

To be clear, NSI forced resignation is not a layoff. It is also LEGAL to use. Attempting to call it something different than it is not won't change the fact it is a performances based resignation/termination in at will states.

I understand how the general public feels about the oil and gas industry. The issue here is how a major global corporation treats its employees. It's the illegal actions. Yes, there are some people with the company that have high salaries. But there are a lot of tenured employees with well below $100k/year. I understand layoffs (in this case layoff disguised). There's a big difference when employees are given a 60 day notice, and the first round are mostly packages for anyone who wants to resign voluntarily. This doesn't mean that the remaining employees are immune to being cut. But it gives those remaining more time to figure out their next move. Not all employees, especially older employees with medical conditions or family with medical conditions can pick up and move on as easily. There should be some consideration for seniority. At a minimum, don't include tenured employees in the first round of layoffs if they have never been in the NSI category before, which is what happened here.

Probably won’t find a lot of sympathy with the general public, but might serve to inform others in industry and upcoming graduates of what they are in for. This stunt (devised by some demonic sicko) is really going to be harmful to this company’s reputation. Doesn’t matter today in a very tight employment market, but sure might later.
