Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Over 40 have you seen your PIP Or elected to leave (retire if eligible)?

So if you’re over forty you had 2 options or 3 options if over 55.

PIPs need to be communicated by the 31st of Aug so have you seen yours?

Is it achievable?

Or did you decide to take the 3 months pay and make like a tree and leave?

Day 18 Starts and I’m tired of this. I knew it would be a grind and I was prepared for that. The support from colleagues I’ve told has been great as well and most genuinely surprised by it. I’ve received several dear john letters from work friends that took the PIl.

I’m amazed at some of the comments in other threads and the lack of empathy but it’s anonymous so true colors shine.

My rant is done but for those reading and on a pip hang in there the fight has just begun, stay strong you are better than them!

People do get out of PIPs occasionally but crawling back out of the bottom third will be a looong and arduous process - it can happen, it has happened, but took years of grind - IDK, you may be into that sort of thing. And that it is not her choice only. By the end of three months they may change the rules (e.g. increase to 10% or 15%, not unreasonable) and it may be out of her hands. Let alone that she may not be there herself - she sounds naive. This is just the beginning: with the bottom off, this year's "good" or "very good" will be next year's NSIs. Go to a different industry- oil is dying a nasty death.

Getting this back on track

I received what seems to be a pip that I can work with on Tuesday. From the other topics on this page (as well as a colleague who took the 3 months) it seems if a supervisor doesn’t care they try and force you out by saying it will be impossible to pass. I get the feeling they just want to be done with it the easiest way possible.

I have one day left to decide and I’m leaning towards staying. My supervisor is being open and honest. It will be hard work but it’s her decision to keep me on in the end. I just need to meet the metrics set up in the plan.

For those telling people why stay, just leave. It’s a matter of principle. I am not a low performer and I know it. I feel I still add value to this company and my supervisor agrees with me. As others have said this has opened my eyes and I will have an exit plan as needed but for now I’m ready to fight.

Ok, let me guess. You cannot get a job in any other company than XOM. I understand now.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier to polish your resume and start marketing yourself? This is not the only company with jobs. Be grateful that you were compensated well all these years. They are losing money too.

Amazing how we doubled down of force ranking and how Darren Woods is using this tool to get rid of employees. Wow.. Anyway come 2025, I’m sure he will be retiring too, esp for such performance.. just buying himself time..

Heart goes out to those choosing to under go PIP. You will need more than hard work.

To all poor souls out there - I am giving away a great tip here. I learnt about it purely by accident.

You can take FMLA leave while on PIP. The moment you get the PIP, be ready to ask for stress induced FMLA on the spot - prepare the paperwork in advance.

Fmla interference & retaliation is illegal, put this knot on their rope! Exhaust your vacation, then do unpaid. 12 weeks total. They are saying it's not a layoff, so they have no reason to fire you while you are out! And it's almost illegal for them to bother you while you are in fmla.

For still deciding, my heart goes out to you, this whole situation s—s. Your supervisor is going to assign you projects and tasks that you have little or no chance of success or completion within a short amount of time. No matter how good your work actually is and if you are already on your managers lay-off list they will have enough documentation to make you look as though you can’t do your job.
Your boss will document weekly meetings, hang over your shoulder and constantly be on the phone with HR. You won’t survive the gauntlet and it will be super stressful not only to you, but your family watching you go through this terror of a manager.

There should not be a perception of 'mixed signals'. It's a done you are done.
Any Super/Mgr indicating you have a chance - is simply a sadist.

The risk profile of PIP isn’t commensurate with PIL. For starters, there is no guarantee it will last 3 months, if anything it’s easier to terminate under any pretext, including insufficient progress or potential for achievement. While it’s possible some PIPs will survive, the cut isn’t about one person; the bean counters have determined a target needs to be cut, and you know how managers are about metrics. Finally, beyond the stigma, the decider factor for me was: why stay. If you haven’t lost faith in the integrity of supervisors, managers and the system, I don’t know what other way it can be communicated that you’re not valued.
There is a life behind that abusive relationship.

Feel the same as you. I worked on PIP with Mgr, but not sure I believe that you can succeed based on current events.

Will 12 more weeks make any difference?

I’m over 40 but I want to stay. I feel like I was thrown under the bus by my manager and I want to fight but I too have mixed feelings...I don’t want that person to win. And I don’t want to lose. I have a family and responsibilities. Not sure what I’m going to do.

Was told it will be ready on Wednesday after HR and Law review it.

Still trying to decide on which way to go. I get mixed signals from my manager.
