Flat Organization - Supervisors and Middle Management

Many talented people will leave once the economy improves. XOM needs to take immediate action reducing overhead costs, streamlining the organization by eliminating many layers of supervisors and middle management, and improve productivity. Many of them can't do anything if they are out of management jobs. This is the most effective way to reduce costs and rebuild employee confidence.

The humble and hardworking world is still working on finding a cure for the ability of malignant cells to survive, metastasize and spread rapidly. The cure will take a while.

The managers are a huge problem at EM. The treat their employees like a sweatshop and are very old school and cynical. They are self interested and don’t care about the plight of people in the company. They operate in fear. It’s already a tense environment and they pollute their entire department. People are running harder and faster to keep up, it’s a lot of pressure and the managers love it because it is power for them, they love it for their employees to have such uncertainty for job security and they think it produces results. If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen (old school). The managers want people to feel vulnerable and off balance bc they thrive on feeling strong and powerful. They are the bullies of EM.
Corporate and executives are turning a blind eye and they ignore their responsibility for the situation. They keep denying the problem and keep letting the managers abuse their power. The managers are leaving a trail of victims - anything goes- work hard and kiss a** or be PIPd now or down the road.
EM needs to fix the managers or fire them. Look for patterns of bad managers and the managers that have complaints against them. Identify the problem managers, look at the departments where all employees want out to go anywhere else within EM to just get out of horrible working atmosphere.

In past lower ranked managers were put in professional jobs. Many of their tech skills were out of date and they frequently dropped on in ranking. While some may have had higher ranking than other professionals as supervisor, once ranked with real professionals, they tended to fall further. Lesson: maintain your technical skills. Being a boss is often not enough

Can any EMIT people even imagine any of the supervisors or managers try to go back to technical roles? Oh wait, that’s how they f-ed it up in the first place. They need to outsource the entire thing to India.

I’m not sure what’s more concerning, the backlog of supervisors jockeying for a spot while just counting beans, worrying about time writhing, and doa plans; or the parade of sidetracked supervisors demoted back to technical but in positions of influence as “advisors”. Because they know the system and their pals rank them, they are unlikely to get the boot.
It just means more pressure for the technical folks carrying the added weight.

Never going to happen. The system exists to produce EM managers not oil and gas.
