I was told first thing yesterday morning that my position was eliminated. HR person sounded like they were reading from a script and plugged in what #s were relevant to me. Allegedly the box to send my laptop back won’t arrive for awhile. Why would I want to hold on to a laptop when Friday is my last day? Why wouldn’t the company want the laptop back ASAP? Friggin nuts.

Laptop has become a paperweight. If you try to use it even just to search for a job a banner pops up saying this is Dell property and it shuts down. I know that a Dell competitor lets anyone laid off keep their laptop. But a computer company can't let someone keep a 4 year old computer?
Nobody with work visas was impacted only citizens. I am in disgust!
Dell makes laptops, which is why i imagine there’s no rush to get yours back. It probably won’t even be given to someone else, just sold as a refurb or sc-apped for parts.
The HR person told me weeks as in 1.5 months to receive the box/paperwork to send back. Maybe there is nowhere or no one to check the assets in since they are WFR.
Even if u go to another company, same thing might happen... and as we get older we r more prone to getting let go! Solution is to have govt regulations similar to those in Europe where companies have to give up-to 5yrs worth of severance, healthcare obviously isn’t impacted and sometime the company laying you off has to help u find a job. This is how economies are sustained and communities are protected.
I was affected and I’m learning about whole teams good portions of teams getting hit. Internal IT hit hard. Eliminating positions not needed? What a joke.
First off, I want to wish everybody who was recently let go the best of luck going forward. I'm a 30+ year industry veteran, and I have been through this before...twice. I know at least 5 people let go yesterday @ Dell...one on my team. I feel very fortunate to keep my job as it will allow me to continue to look for a new one. Dell did this before in late 2013 / early 2014. Employees got to choose between a voluntary or involuntary separation. That option bit them on the a$$ as all the talented people took the voluntary seperaton and got jobs immediately many at competitors...I was among them. This layoff is different as a I look at senior management and their outside consultants in how they approached the integration of two large companies and didn't pursue new industry trends quick enough. Our executives/consultants did a very c-appy job...not very well thought out or executed.. Everybody is talking about the RIF today, and morale is very low. I have been looking to leave for close to 8 months and just not found the right fit. I'm going to continue my search ASAP.
Directors got together with their teams yesterday and today talking about the business reasons for this incremental RIF that was planned back in July, and what the new plan is going forward. My Director stated "no more layoffs are planned that he is aware of". Do you know how many people believe him? I'm guessing zero. Nothing management says at this point is going to be believed. They've really put themselves in a box. Who is going to believer a word they say? The TellDell results will be at an all time low at the next go around.
I know this is a large business. We all heard Tom Sweets message about Net Income and OPEX. Many people familiar with the company know Aug (beginning of fiscal 2H) is a weary time, and were aware that layoffs were going to happen. But yesterday, I think many got blindsided by their Directors/Manager and HR. Again, I wish you all well going forward. There are plenty of companies out there who tout their ethics, and back it up.
Maybe they are being kind and hope you use your laptop to apply for new jobs.... ?
