Hope for Change

Here is the bottom line. We all hope for change. I personally have been hoping for change for 20 years. It has not come. It has gotten worse. I know me hoping for change and it not coming and still working here is sad. I decided to post this for those of you earlier in your careers. Change is not easy and it is not fast. There is also no guarantee it will happen. I don’t think management believes there is a problem. Don’t waste your life away hoping it will change. If you don’t like working at XOM, you should work somewhere that meets your values. You have a choice.

As a consumer, you should educate yourself on what products O&G provides and if you want alternatives you need to ask for and buy those alternatives. You need to show there is demand.

After the F&L employee forum yesterday I don’t see a change coming. It was said many times...we are ExxonMobil and this is the way we do business.

It is true about the titles. You cannot get a title at Exxonmobil but you will certainly do the job. It is no benefit to your career unless you plan to stay at Exxon until you retire. By then you will have missed out on a lot.

I would just echo anyone that is thinking about leaving to actually start exploring your options. I left a couple years ago and kick myself for staying as long as I did.

XOM recruits a risk adverse profile who they can sell on a long "stable" career and the pension. They then exploit that in two ways:

  1. Claim that nowhere else will pay you a similar "total compensation". This is false in most instances unless you have a very niche skillset. Look at their own remuneration presentations, they benchmark to the 70 - 80 percentile.
  1. Actively suppress job titles and positions. XOM has way too many layers, but notice the titles don't follow other industries, much less given the comparative responsibility. This makes it even harder to jump as your career progresses.

A little over 2 years after leaving, I went from a "supervisor" at XOM to a Sr. Director, oddly enough my total compensation is over 3x despite me halving half the responsibility I had.

I've been hoping to help be the change or leave and I'm still here too somehow, 14 yrs later. It's really hard now to leave without a skillset thats transferable anywhere.

To those young enough with the same thought, leave. You might start out making less than you do now, but that won't last long. EM has basically promised no raises for 5 yrs...5YRS!!!!! And the amount of work you will need to do in that time will be exponential. Not trying to clear out space for someone else, just genuinely trying to save even one person from being in the same scenario.

Management needs to change to save this more than 100 year old company as opposed to becoming "Eastman Kodak" example.
