Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Order of business

No one should stay at job they 1) don't enjoy and 2) they don't feel valued for doing. If neither of those apply go find another job and then resign your position.

Your colleagues will appreciate working with someone who wants to be part the team and your manager will enjoy the opportunity to replace you with someone who wants be here. It's your choice to be happy, no one owes you anything.

To the person making comments about 45 year olds - out of curiosity- what is wrong with not wanting to rise up the corporate ladder? What if you really like what you do, are good at it, but don’t want to be a manager of other people and spend your days presenting powerpoints etc.? Dell is a decent company, but it’s not Apple and never be. But speaking of Apple, I recommend you read Steve Jobs’ deathbed essay. So many people In tech want to be like him but in the end, he was not happy. I’ve known many wealthy successful people who are not. The key is enjoying what you do and not all talented people have huge egos, nor want to play corporate politics. It’s ignorant to think otherwise or automatically assume someone is an id–t because they’re not in a leadership role by 45.

We all get older, just remember that. Older people also have more experience in life and in work. A lot of factors can influence how high up the ladder a person rises, so for those making comments about average performers...don't make assumptions based on that observation.

This is a site about layoffs and stating that people who are unhappy should just leave is pretty oblivious to what is going on. The company is the one laying people off. Many of these folks were probably relatively happy about their jobs and roles in the company, which, might I add made, in their words "record profits" last quarter of 1B and yet still feels the need to lay off people. Doesn't make sense to me and it's really great of them to do this mid pandemic with about another 30M other people already unemployed. This is going to a lot of harm to employees that the company allegedly cares about. No reason for this and I for one am p-ss-d.

For the mo–n who comment about. You are probably a first line manager, who knows nothing. You are up upper mgmt's a– and kiss a– is putting it softly. You are a major part of the problem at Dell Tech. You are arrogant, and talk down to the folks on your team. YOU ARE THE ONE THAT NEEDS TO LEAVE. That is if you can find a place who will tolerate your know it all attitude. Go F yourself.

At some point in your career you become a liability to your company. Once you hit 45 and you are still an average or below individual contributor your long term usefulness to the company is in question. Younger more energetic people are coming up behind you and you are not picking up new skills as fast or as well as the younger crowd. So, what do you do, do your best to stay as long as possible because the older you are the harder it is to get a comparable job.
